Who is TVG's Peter Lurie?

A horse named Capiche won the 7th race at Mahoning Valley at 30-1 odds, and Peter Lurie expressed SHOCK that the horse was such a huge price while being "only 10-1 on the morning line"...even though Capiche was in ATROCIOUS form, and Lurie never mentioned the horse in his pre-race- "analysis". "That was a HUGE overlay", Lurie declared post-race...after telling us that he is a "life-long horseplayer", and a great lover of the sport.

Can TVG engage Cj to teach these guys a little something about handicapping, so their viewers might, in turn, learn a little something...even by accident?

cj 12-27-2017 04:06 PM

I think he just got hired as Santa Anita's in house expert. 🤣

thaskalos 12-27-2017 04:09 PM

Truth is stranger than fiction.

That is true. He is with the woman that is on TVG later today, think her name is Meghan.

Tom 12-27-2017 04:26 PM

Sounds more like the outhouse expert.

How much did he bet on it?

TVG = Greek for "mute"

GMB@BP 12-27-2017 04:28 PM

Many of these guys at TVG offer no real insight into how to handicap and bet the horses.

Its a shame really.

I am reading a book right now and one think I thought of was how empty the marketplace is for a new younger player when it comes to learning the sport.

You surely will learn very little from TVG. For all the Andy Serlings out there that provide valuable insight on the handicapping process there are to many that just give you one obvious fact and reason to play every horse.

JustRalph 12-27-2017 04:52 PM

Tough room.

Lurie was one of the lead hosts on HRTV for years. He knows the game pretty well. He’s also a voiceover guy with nice credits

I would rather listen to him anyday instead of Todd or Mike Joyce.

The 7th race at Mahoning today had 9 horses...and when it was time for Lurie to make a pre-race selection, he picked the :2: True Appeal, who was the 9/5 betting choice....without mentioning Capiche at all. Capiche was an off-form horse who was worth every penny of the 30-1 that he was offered at. With only 2 tracks running in the entire country during that time...what prevented Lurie from identifying the "bargain price" that Capiche was offered at, BEFORE the winner was revealed? If Capiche was the "huge overlay" that Lurie made the horse out to be after the race...then, why did he select the :2: as his betting choice? Wasn't he concerned with "overlays" when he chose the :2: as his betting choice in the race?

As an on-air horse racing host, the man is a total joke, IMO...and it's a sad testament to the current state that our game finds itself in when someone with this sort of handicapping "knowledge" can get a job as the in-house "expert" in a major racing place like Santa Anita.

For all of you that criticize people that are public handicappers, please tell me what you would do differently? Would you pick more winners? Advertise your win rate? Offer "insightful" comments and items of interest that you somehow glean that no one else does? Blather trainer and jockey stats? Discuss the pace of the race with amazing accuracy? WHAT?

Please. Concentrate on your own game. You'll be way better off.

Racey 12-27-2017 08:51 PM

Lurie.....meh

I mean no national handicapper offers more than the great Kenny Peck..... 90 percent are beyond awful led by the TVG staff ....I would say that kid Bernier is a fraud as well borrowed cash from grand mom to fund his game and now somehow is the games newest star.....some game.

I know what I would do:

I would select the favorite before the race...and then I would dazzle my audience by returning to the race after it's over...and telling them all the reasons why the longshot winner was such a "huge overlay" in the race.

And, yes...we DO concentrate on our own game. But we can easily "multi-task", by also criticizing the incompetence in the game...when we see it.

The game needs superior talent such as yours. You should better the game by attaining a job in the industry as a public (TV) handicapper. You can make a difference.

Now you are talking! Put me in front of the TVG camera...and watch the interest in this game skyrocket.

I always wondered how he got the job w DRF and NBC? He was the worst handicapper on that horseplayers show?

Racey 12-27-2017 11:23 PM

A youthful shot in the arm

For a game that needs it but will never get it. The kid got his own gig at DRF and is a fraud at best, They took Brad Thomas and Peck off to replace them with the KID..... back to Kenny Peck he should get more press the guy is good very good at recognizing opportunities against the flow.

He was 20 to 40 years younger than the other handicappers on the show. Youth sells in TV.

Have you watched his shows on DRF? He seems fully competent with explaining his racing options, along with Mike Beer and David Argona I think they are all excellent young handicappers. (though Beer is close to my age)

ultracapper 12-28-2017 11:33 AM

Off topic.

TVG had a promo Tuesday where you bet $10W and if your horse finishes 2nd or 3rd, you get your $10 back, on EVERY race that day.

I just got the e-mail notification this morning.

Better late than never, I guess.

oughtoh 12-28-2017 11:35 AM

I think it is good through Dec 31

ultracapper 12-28-2017 11:39 AM

That'd be cool then. I didn't read the fine print.

It's a promo you MUST exercise.

oughtoh 12-28-2017 11:42 AM

Only at SA

Any public handicapper is going to be wrong the majority of the time...to follow and bet consistently with them is to follow folly down the rabbit hole....one must follow one's own inclinations to gain any insight and satisfaction in the sport...

PointGiven 12-28-2017 12:32 PM

While true some of TVGs handicappers are dreadful, there are some that add useful information. You just have to learn to pick and choose. The aforementioned Peter does well at Indiana Grand, where he has been in house.

Matt- You have to be careful letting him talk you into his latest 9:1 shot. But if you listen to his comments there is good information. You decide what has value.

Kurt- really does good prep and can give out good stuff.

The ladies do a great job all the way around.

TC is really good in certain spots.

Joaquin is to, especially when it's just him on the desk for smaller tracks especially. I remember on night from Remington his and Chris Ks top choices were the exacta all night. Didn't take much doing to come up with a couple more to round out tri's.

Yes there is way to much buffoonery. But some good stuff here and there.

oughtoh 12-28-2017 12:51 PM

TVG just said it is not on every race just the races they pick every day

olddaddy 12-28-2017 12:54 PM

The only thing I know about lurie is he thinks he has a golden throat and the size of his melon.

SandyW 12-28-2017 01:15 PM

Peter Lurie is one of the better handicappers and host that is now on the air.
A pleasure to listen to and very knowledgeable.

PointGiven 12-28-2017 01:55 PM

I've never had a problem watching him. Or Sarge, Rich, or Caleb either. Really liked it when Frank can sit in.

Well apparently he has a golden throat because he has made a living doing voiceover work. That is a very competitive business

Racetrack Playa 12-28-2017 08:31 PM

IDK , I like the Cajun Leatherhead better

oughtoh 12-28-2017 09:20 PM

I met him a couple times at Pomona when he was working there and he was always nice.

TonyK@HSH 12-28-2017 09:55 PM

Peter also owned horses and worked as a jockey agent as well. He is well versed in industry matters.

Didn't SA fire him and others from the Xpressbet TV a while back?

pandy 12-29-2017 10:54 PM

Lurie is knowledgeable and covers thoroughbreds and harness racing. He seems to pick his fair share of winners, too.

big frank 01-04-2018 06:25 PM

Chalk Eater

Lurie picks the chalk about 80 percent of the time...........And his famous saying after he wins on a 6/5 shot is '''''' You have to take what they give you ''''''''

CincyHorseplayer 01-04-2018 11:27 PM

Unless someone seems knowledgeable or cool enough to want to hang around I feel it is basically a "who gives a shit?" situation! I guess the fixation is why many of you are successful poker players. In poker you can trim money off them while despising every ounce of their being. With racing and no opportunity only Unbridled Hatred provides any satisfaction! I roll with the former approach!
