betting clerks
 

Anyone ever hear of a story of a betting clerk betting with money he didnt have and lose?I always wondered if a clerk would bet 10 grand on a heavy favorite and make some money.

And here's a true story

So I believe at most tracks and off track betting establishments it's against the rules either for clerks to bet at all or bet on their machines. At NYRA or the handfuls of union places the rules might be different but I think the most tracks technically ban you from betting on your own machine. The thinking is to prevent this.

Obviously the problem is enforcement. It's essentially an unenforceable rule. Layer on top of it the guy supervising the tellers is almost always an ex-teller.

Actually in law school, in the "illegal income" chapter of my tax law textbook, they still use an illustrative case of an OTB clerk who bet tens of thousands of dollars he didn't have on random finger lakes races. I think he still had to pay Uncle Sam for the few bets he actually did hit.

Years ago some of the tellers floated money between each other when they knew they were not being checked. Heard a lot of real crazy stories, however nothing that I know was verified as the truth...but you never know what can happen when you have a degenerate gambler sitting in a cage with a pile of green backs in front of him!!!

You are right about enforcement. I have actually had to wait to place a bet while a clerk was cashing ticket. Happens all the time.

I worked as a teller at Monmouth and meadowlands and also Las Vegas books. At the track you could bet, at a race book you couldn't, you would either have to bet at another casino while on break or occasionally we would have a patron put in bets.

When I worked you had to turn in the bank after each day, if you were short it came out of the next paycheck. At the casino you had a small forgiveness before they would take out of your check but they might also fire you if came up short too often (I knew someone who worked at the mirage back then and they told me overages were also frowned on there). At the track overages were yours to keep.

One guy I worked with at Monmouth told me had years before worked at Garfen State and you only had to turn in your till at the end of the meet. He said many Tellers were thousands of dollars short with shortages increasing as putting a $1000 to show on a 2/5 who runs out doesn't always go right.

Like MJ I see many tellers betting at least here in the northeast.

The old trick is the teller doesn't clear his machine and you end up paying for his bet, I'm sure you have seen this before...

I have, you have to be careful. A Teller can overpay too if the don't clear the machine after a pay. They wind up working for hardly any pay.

Also, if you have a bunch of tickets to cash turn them over one at a time. I knew this one guy who in that situation would let one fall through uncashed and then cash for themselves after the patron left the window.

Great thing about Sam machines is you can consolidate all your tickets and cash once. vegas won't let you do that because they don't have Sam machines with physical tickets, not sure why, it's 2017 for god sakes

I agree, is rather bet myself, make my own mistakes, I don't like being rushed either. One time years ago I saw a self machine at LV Hilton but never anywhere else.

I couldn't believe the crap that was written. I kept staring at it and finally and thankfully I saw the part about it being fake news.
