Gormley

Whats your guys thoughts of Gormley? Is he just a slow horse who beat a bunch of other slow horses in the Santa Anita derby, the best of a weak west coast crop with Mastery hurt? Or is he the next over looked Santa Anita Derby winner like I'll Have Another?

1 thing of note Bris Speed Figures and Beyers differ on him greatly. Beyer has him decrease in beyer as the races get longer regressing 2 times in a row. Bris gives him much better marks.

I think Gormley is a little underrated. He had a couple of weaker efforts. He got stuck chasing a freak in Mastery in the San Felipe, and his Juvenile was kind of a wide trip throughout. I think he rebounded nicely in the Santa Anita Derby and showed he can come from behind a bit too.

Definitely the best of the CA crop, which seems a little weaker this year- but I wouldn't be surprised if he hits the board in the Derby.

The good: Gormley was no glaring weaknesses. Grand colt. When allowed to relax, he is full of run on the far turn. Victor Espinoza really liked this guy right away. Brutal trip in Breeders Cup Juvenile(helps value).

The bad: He was third best in the Santa Anita Derby. He won the Santa Anita Derby(hurts value). When asked to attend a star 3yo in the San Felipe, he did not have his typical strength on the far turn(must suck-up mid-pack as a deep 'e/p' or 'P' type to run his 'A' race). Similar overconfidence displayed in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, when Espinoza thought he could quarterhorse to good 1st-turn position from a wide post, and was met with a harsh reality-check.

The ugly: A good trip with his 'A' race is not fast enough to crush Derby foes(lacks star talent).

While I still don't count him as a win candidate, more than a couple of my compadres on track at SA have commented how deep and tiring the track has been, more so than they could remember in a long time. When this happens at a California track...I tend to listen.
