Huge Win Bets at Delta last night
 

There were some big underlays and overlays last night at Delta thanks to a mysterious bettor placing vast amount of $$$ on horses to win. Anybody notice that too? No way this bettor made any money, his/her payoffs were of the $2.10 variety when tickets were cashed.

Same thing has been happeniong at Charlestown.....maybe CT being cancelled sent that bettor to Delta?

It's happened at Indiana Downs also.

Yes, I happened to be playing delta last night and somebody lost their shorts. In the second race there was $15K bet to win on a horse when the odds opened. In the 3rd race I think it was more than $20K. Neither horse won, they both ran second. The funny thing was that they were both like 1-5 or 1-9 in the win pool but had much smaller percentages in the place pools. It was basically a no lose situation. I bet all of the other horses to win, putting more on the ones with lower odds and bet the favorite to place. It worked out perfectly when the favorite ran second in both races!

There were two really strange things about these wagers in the trial races. First of all, if someone is going to bet so much that they knock the oods down to 1/9, why not do it in the show pool. That would be equally crazy, but less risky. The payoffs in the later races, where the large bets hit were:
4th race
$2.10 $2.80 $2.10

6th race
$2.10 $3.00 $2.10

Secondly, the second and third races were Quarterhorse trial races and there were only two heats. After the scratches there were only 12 or 13 horses competing for 10 spots in the finals. In situations like this the primary goal is to make it to the finals, not necessarily to win the trial (both heavy favorites ran second and made the finals). Why make a large win bet on a horse now when the main objective is two weeks down the road?

Yes for someone to make huge bets in trials like these it is very strange or totally ignorant. Horses do not have to win to advance and you have to wonder, especially in qh racing where racing often is not the norm, if they don't want to squeeze the lemon dry in the prep.....do you think this mysterious bettor will be back tonight???

This is strange. Most of the time in the Qt world these kinds of bets are connections driven... Makes no sense.

This guy must get around.Last night at Meadowlands harness in race 6,the pacer in post #1 got a $10,000 bet early in the wagering.He sat at 1-9 until late in the betting,and then drifted up a bit,closing at 4-5.Sorry for our big bettor,his plunge play finished 3rd.

the 1/5 shots ran second, and payed 7.00 to place...

Someone must have bought the Superchalk method from RPM.

Probably some screw-up with a computerized betting program similar to the CRW/IRG/Youbet snafu's of a few years ago.

Last year I saw the same thing happen one night at Mountaineer: Every #5 horse was opening up with $5K to win on them. It was strange, because the #5 in the 1st race was a 20/1 longshot with no form; the horse didn't run a lick, and finished well up the track.

When the same type of scenario played out in the 2nd race, my best guess was that some casino bettor with a lot of cash, or a hunch player, was simply playing every #5.

This hunch bettor lost their shirt that night as well, not cashing until a chalky #5 favorite scored in the 6th race.

It's just another good reason to keep a close on the early money -- Obviously there are nice overlay opportunities available if you can spot this type of misplaced action early on...
