My XP Operating System is no longer supported.
 

I'm having some problems related to that I think.

I can always do a destructive recovery and start over.

I've already tried resetting Windows to earlier dates with some success.

I'm not a programmer and don't understand how to best address this.

If you have everything backed up.....

Recover it. I run a Vista machine and back everything up regular.

About twice a year I do it. I am going to have to break down sometime and buy a system.....but my Vista does 99% of what I need

If you get a newer Windows and download something called Classic Shell, you can make the start menu look like Windows XP...if that helps at all. http://classicshell.net/

If your adamant about remaining with XP?
Find a shop that sells, repairs and rebuilds used computers (there are lots).
Most have installation discs that will still install older OS's.

The downside is that updates (needed in most instances) are no longer available (for the longest while MS lets us download updates, however later on they changed to online updates only. Since XP is no longer supported the updates are non existent.)
Best you may hope for is Version updates (SV1, SV2 or SV3).

I'd like to make a suggestion for anyone who is considering purchasing a new computer.

For the last 2 years I've been buying refurbs and have just been thrilled with them.

I buy them from a local computer store. They find me whatever I ask for. Personally, I like Win7 the best. My typical configurations is:

• I7 processor (4 cores)
• Win7-64 Pro
• 8GB RAM
• 500GB SSD
• Dual monitor video cards
• 4 USB3 ports

Without monitors, keyboard, mouse, my cost is always under $500. (Actually the precise machine I mention above, which was purchased 6 months ago, was $447.)

These are always name brands like Dell, HP, Compaq.

Do not try to buy one directly from Dell, HP, etc. Find someone local who will give you fair pricing and keep going to them.

My guys have gotten so good at this stuff that I've actually had some HSH users buy through them.

In 2010 I had such a store that built me a project computer for just under $300. After completing the project I've used it for other things, although sparingly.
It's a nice machine and shows how effective smart shopping and good techs may be.
There are lots of smaller 1-2 person shops in larger metro areas.

YES! Truthfully, I still have about 6 or 7 XP machines that I set up and use for A.I. runs. Because of security issues, I would never put them on the web, but these old, Pentium 4 machines are actually plenty fast for my purposes because they OS is not as bloated as today's.

Two weeks ago I ran into an HSH user who bought a snazzy Alienware machine from Dell 18 months ago. Not sure what he actually paid but it was like approaching $3k.

How does Dell sell anyone an I7 with EIGHT CORES and only put in EIGHT GB RAM? Especially with Win10!!!

What a pig that machine was. I've got my tech guys killing all the bloatware and getting him to pump the RAM to 64GB. Hopefully, it will become the screamer that it should be.

I broke down and bought an Alienware last night......spent 2k.

But I got 32 ram.

From what I could tell, it seems that the Dell version of Alienware is mostly snazzy video card and hot processor, if you aren't careful. As I said earlier, I cannot imagine how anyone could, with a clear conscience, sell a Win10 machine with only 8GB of RAM and call it Alienware.

But you know more about this stuff than I do. You know how to tweak whatever might need tweaking.

To tell ya the truth Dave, I don’t keep up with this crap anymore. I used to be on top of all this stuff when I was in the business. I find myself looking stuff up all the time now. One thing that drew me to the Alienware is the huge amount of items I can control and tweak. That appeals to me.

I think this will be plenty of computer for years to come

Unless you're gaming (and even if you are, this will last you a few years), this PC should be good for the life of the PC itself...lol

As for people still running XP, WHY?

Makes ZERO sense to me. You can get a DECENT PC (and I mean decent in that it will be a billion times better than whatever it is you are still running XP on) for $500 or less. And it will have Win10 on it...

Running XP is not only a security risk, it provides for a miserable existence, as evidenced by these threads.

I will just humbly sit quietly and say, "WOW!"

At this point its kind of like adjusting rabbit ears to get the best picture.

It certainly can be done though.

I'll buy a Windows 10 machine when and if I have to.

I'm making too much progress adjusting the ears.

I suspect Alienware is the APPLE of the PC world.

I doubt if anything over 16 gig ever gets used unless you're editing video. And Not sure its all that much faster than an SSD even for that .
