I thought that race and the Elate race were kind of non competitive. If either of those would of lost, you know there’s a problem. Oh well .

That’s the state of the game Tom. Those races yesterday were questionable. Even the Diana, they were lucky Chad had 3 really good runners to enter but when the “rabbit” went running how was Sistercharlie going to lose? Game Winner and Elate were public work outs to boot. Agreed on Game Winner

It was a good prep and he finished well, but I'm not sure it proved anything one way or the other about where he fits with the best 3yos.

awful, awful race, but interesting to watch to see if Game Winner flashed any 'brilliance'...

Was an 'odd' race shape...

Just 'disregard' the early fractions of the leader (was it)Kingly? I forget ... That was not actually the pace, as no one took him seriously at any point (including his own jock, who was there 100% to set up GW, with no intent on winning unless something extremely random happened)...

Was already slow early IIRC, but you would shade the pace even softer,

because of that, the race shape didn't develop early, Game Winner looked uncomfortable early, and the race looked awkward early, The Doug O'Neill horse ran an improved race, but eventually Game Winner settled in and out-classed his overachieving rival.

Did not show any flashes of 'brilliance'. Didn't show anything particularly negative either.

Just a paid workout, as it appeared to be before the race. Hakell? or Travers? or what next?

Weird race and ran wide yet again. His final panel in 11.85 and the final 3/8 in a little less than 35.8 is pretty darn good, particularly after a modest layoff. He should be ready to go for a solid Travers performance.

Future BC odds on him? A sportsbook is finally opening up semi-close to me in August!

Obvious prep.
He did what he was supposed to do.
2yo Champion has never run a bad race.
He'll be double tough the rest of the year.
Grade 1 winner again soon enough.

I thought he ran well. He has never been a flashy horse, more of a grinder. He got a slight lifetime top from me. We don't add in ground loss so maybe he has run better, but it was also a slow paced raced which makes it tougher to get a good number. I think he'll run very well where ever he shows up next.

Twofold purpose:
Baffert needed a race to tighten the screws on him for the Travers.
A confidence builder could only help him.

I agree. It was what it was meant to be and just what he needed. He did it the hard way with a wide trip to give him a good tightener. He finished strong with a good TFUS rating for a prep race. He was the top 3YO up to and including the Derby, ran the best race there., earning a better TG figure than the winner. He was the best before his layoff and with normal development and a good prep should be ready for to resume in the Travers and BC classic.

All he needed was a good prep race after the layoff and he'e should be ready. The month has nothing to do with it. He wasn't going to be ready from sitting in the barn regardless of what month it is.

Is Game Winner better than Mucho Gusto?

I personally don't know. Mucho Gusto ran nearly as well as Maximum Security in the Haskell. Coming into that race, Mucho Gusto was considered talented, but a notch below the top guns.

I always like Mucho Gusto better, but figured he might develop later than GW.
I also liked Game Winner for the Belmont. I'd like to see him going longer than 1-1/4 actually.

Announced yesterday Max is headed to the PA Derby next month. Looking like an uninspiring renewal of the Travers this year.

And just 3 days ago it was looking so promising too... :mad:


Should still be a good race, but it really looked like it was shaping up to be a once a decade type Travers.

Sums up the whole 3yo season this year - disappointing.

Major bummer.

I was looking forward to seeing Game Winner run from an intellectual perspective alone. I want to see how good he actually is.

Travers is missing some of the horses I had hoped to see.
But the Whitney was, too, and from what I can see, The Woodward is looking like a pretty lackluster one, too, like Whitney v.2 ---unless some compelling horses run in it.

I would go to SAR for the beautiful setting, but the quality of racing is nothing to write home about this year, that's for sure---the values aren't that good either.

Really makes me miss Gun Runner.

If Royal Ascot had not happened, I think I would be suffering from withdrawal due to a lack of good racing at this point. That was enough to "tide me over"

Game Winner has been working steadily towards a return. He's had 9 published workouts so far. He can't be too far away from a race. I forgot all about him. I guess I assumed he was retired. I saw a video of one of his workouts yesterday. It was a slow breeze in company, but he looked pretty big and strong.

Any news on Game Winner?



That June 8 work was the last one he had... is he off the work tab? I know they have a stud deal lined up for 2021, which makes his comeback seem less and less likely as the weeks/months roll by, but I hope he makes it back for a race or two.

Can't be a good sign I wouldn't think.

Still nothing. My guess is he's as good as retired with the 2021 stud deal worked out last year...
