Baseball Hall-of-Famer Lou Brock, whose major-league career spanned from 1961 until 1979, has passed away at age 81 from multiple health-related issues.

After spending just over three seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Brock played the bulk of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals.

A lifetime .293 hitter, he led the league in steals eight times, scored 100 or more runs seven times, and amassed 3,023 hits. At one time, he held the records for both single-season and career stolen bases, although each has since been surpassed.

Brock was even better in postseason play, playing on two World Series champions (1964 and 1967), while batting .391 with four homers, 16 RBIs and 14 steals in 21 games. He had a record-tying 13 hits in the 1968 World Series, and in Game 4 homered, tripled and doubled as the Cardinals trounced Detroit and 31-game winner Denny McLain 10-1.

Hell of an offensive weapon. He set the modern day stolen base record age 35. Think of that! And followed that season with back to back seasons of 56 bags stolen. Amazing

R.I.P. One heck of a ballplayer. The 1964 NL season was one of the best going into the last few days. The 1964 World Series was one of my favorites. Great games. Tore up the Tigers in 68.

A .293 lifetime batting avg. and a whole lot of speed. A lot of fun to watch, especially with Bob Gibson on the mound.

Today's game has shifted more towards Homers or K's

I grew up in southern Illinois during Lou's playing days and playing sandlot ball, every kid became Lou Brock when he got on base.

His 1974 run at Maury Wills single season stolen bases record was a day to day following for us, usually listening to the games on the radio, though I do remember a few games of the week on TV that were interrupted anytime Lou got on base.
They would cut to the Cardinal game, then show the split screen battle between him and the pitcher. The stadium would be buzzing with crowd noise in anticipation of what was to come. He blew the record out of the water getting 118 that year I think, to Maury's 104.

Always came across as a very smart, good guy in interviews. Came up with the Brockabella - the umbrella hat - that was popular for a time around St. Louis.
