Churchill Downs Turf Course

What is going on there? Their turf course looks like dormant rough at an Arizona golf course and last year the grass died and had to be replaced. This is the Bluegrass state and they can't grow a grass course. Maybe the should hire a greenskeeper?

Yes, and when it opened a few weeks ago, I commented how great it looked. It sure went south fast.

Off the turf the rest of today after an unfortunate breakdown in the 2nd.

Something wrong with this course. I hope they don't have to dig it up again and start all over

Replace it with tapeta. That’s what GP has essentially done.

HottalkersinKY 06-11-2022 06:55 AM

wonder what they are going to do with their arlington million day in august

azeri98 06-11-2022 09:33 AM

I didn't know growing grass and maintaining it was this difficult.

Looks like they were more concerned with how the new turf would drain rather than grow. Other grass in the infield is lush.

Embarrassing look for a bellwether of the sport.

..while they hire a new grounds keeper.

Didn't the new turf course cost $80 million? That's a lot of money for a course that's now various shades of ochre six weeks after they opened.

Maybe they have to keep it in the refridgeraror.

Churchill Downs Suspending Races Over New Turf Course For At Least Two Weeks:
https://paulickreport.com/news/the-b...ast-two-weeks/

Churchill Downs Racetrack has suspended racing over its newly rebuilt Matt Winn Turf Course for at least two weeks. The move came one day after Gingrich, a 3-year-old Mr. Speaker colt, suffered a catastrophic injury to a foreleg while racing on the lead inside the eighth pole of a $50,000 claiming race on turf.

“In order to allow our new turf course to continue to develop its root system, we have suspended turf racing for the next two weeks,” said Churchill Downs president Mike Anderson. “The new Bermuda-hybrid grass was installed last fall and will continue to mature during the very warm days and weeks ahead. We've made a long-term investment in our turf course, and we're confident this brief pause will allow it to become more robust.”

Churchill Downs began work on what company officials said was a $10-million investment in the new course last July, a project that included widening the surface and removing a crown that made the outer portion of the course unusable. The crown is designed to help drainage, but a new subsurface drainage system eliminated the need for it.

$80 million? Not unless someone threw in the Brooklyn Bridge.

I think it was $10 million. Still, crazy situation.

I do wonder how long this thread would be if it was NYRA ( not that we wouldn't deserve it ). I guess the board Yentas don't care about Churchill.
