Advocates who want California to secede from the rest of the United States were given the green light Monday to begin collecting signatures for their initiative. The latest measure would ask voters in 2020 to decide whether to open up a secession discussion. If passed, a second election would be held a year later asking voters to affirm the decision and become an independent country.

Marcus Ruiz Evans and Louis J. Marinelli, co-founders of the group Yes California, said the second vote would show that Californians are serious about secession and would strengthen the case for foreign governments to recognize the state’s independence.

And if that weren’t enough, there’s yet another proposal in play known as “New California” that would cut out rural counties and make them into their own state. The founders of New California describe the rest of California as “ungovernable.” “The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny,” the group declared in an online statement.

How could it be a civil war? CA doesn't like guns, and those who do support the Union. It would be an uncontested battle where we have the bazookas and they have latte's and Mary Janes.

It always amuses me that the things that are never going to happen are taken the most seriously.

WOW! USA could get a very good price for CA. Let say we sell it to Mexico for 50 trillion....they could put it on a credit card. :)....

True. I look at California as having herpes - it's never going away no matter how irritating it gets.

Chances of this happening are about the same as all those entertainers leaving the country if Bush or Trump were elected.
Quite the fairy tale. In 10 years, despite a huge wall, "Cubafornia" becomes so radically left and violent, we're forced to blow it off the map.
Problem solved, with very little guilt. :)

Several things make this interesting.

1. There is legal precedence against secession. (Texas tried that.)

2. If California voters actually cast a vote on it, they'd not likely get sufficient support unless the state is restructured to create a separate state from the rural areas. That would need to be done first.

3. How will this new country defend itself? Do they think they get to keep the Marines at Pendleton or the ships & sailors in San Diego? They'd certainly keep the bases but not the manpower.

4. How will they support the population that is currently on welfare?

12% of the U.S. population resides here.

5. From the other side of the fence, how would the rest of the country handle the 13% reduction in GDP (which currently comes from CA)?

I read that the “California’s” would gain at least 3 more Congressmen in the house and 4 Senators?

The Dems would lose about 40 electoral votes too......according to what might be the new boundaries.

what I read is that two of the three states that were formerly California would be solid blue and the third would be be light blue/light red. Not a good look from here.
