Horse racing industry shoots itself in the foot, again!!!!!!

The media hype on American Pharaoh was intense, and good for the sport. AP brought a lot of attention to a dying sport.

The first “not raced as a two year old Triple Crown contender in the history of the race”. YAWN.
The horse the broke Apollo Curse, YAWN!!!!!

To the best of my knowledge, it has never rained on both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness for a Triple Crown contender, if at all!!! YAWN!!!

Yesterdays Belmont was the first World Series, the first Superbowl, The FIRST. If it took a 140 years to break Apollo's curse, how many years will it take for another not raced as a two-year old, to win the Kentucky derby, let alone win the Triple Crown or even be a contender.

I think the horse racing industry passion for the sport is best demonstrated by what was said by American Pharaoh's owners son when AP lost in the Travelers in regards to running the Breeders cup.
“He deserves a second chance.”

A second chance to become the FIRST TC winner to run in the Breeders Cup?

The reason I love horse racing is because unlike high school or college athletes, horses don't know about the reward, life in the breeders shed.

Maybe its time to start drug testing on the a—holes who make the decisions in this dying sport instead of the horses.

Hard to build up much hype when the horse is moving so rapidly through the ranks, right out of boot camp and now he's the commanding general.

Justify had his first start less than four months ago. I can't wrap my head around that, he's a phenom.

The first 2 Kentucky Derby Future pools didn't even have Justify on the list.

Not surprised at all compared to when they were trying to end the drought.

As people have said, there are some who will now say its not that hard to do since its happened twice in a few years.

I think you hit nail on head, he did everything so quickly and moved quickly thru a shorter campaign so people didn't get to follow him thru an entire, long, prep season. He did it on sheer talent, with not a whole lot of foundation.

He's really a magnificent animal and deserves accolades.

Baffert, well, I can take him or leave him. I'm not *sure* that if another trainer was sent the level of horses baffert gets, that Justify would not have done just as well, I can think of at least 1/2 dozen or more trainers who could have pulled it off......the athlete is preeminent here. Justify is a special one and deserves a lot of credit.

So does this guy:
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-...mpression=true

I have not found Baffert to be as magnanimous as someone like Aiden O'brien in crediting others.

The point is a great opportunity to promote horse racing was missed.

I didn't bet on gronkowski to come in second, only third, which has nothing to do with a great opportunity to promote horse racing was missed.

I'm not surprised. When Chrome was running it was an inexpensive horse with quirky owners. Pharoah was a big shot expected to break the jinx. Justify is a big conglomerate no one except Baffert in the publc eye. Now if they had a woman like Mrs Tweedy or someone or something to grab the public's eye it would have been huge. Racing on its own no matter what is not popular enough to generate huge ratings.

"Promote horse racing", to WHOM? People who had never heard of the sport before? Because everyone else already knew that the Triple Crown was in its last leg yesterday. Those who didn't know about it wouldn't have cared anyway.
