It looks like we'll have an off track. Been raining all night here.
Suppose to clear and then rain again for the opening day at SA
That doesn't happen often, but it has before once or twice.

I don't like to bet races that are taken off the turf and to the main track.
They are usually short fields of horses who were unlucky enough to get stuck in the race. I fear we'll see this opening day, especially the 6 1/2 turf claimer....

My question is: Do any of you still bet these races? Do any of you follow the horses who scratched out.....I've never seen any stats on this.

MTO horse do well, but are usually over-bet.
I always keep an eye out for any the get overlooked, though.
I typically cut back or move on to another track when it is wet, but I always look for horses who have won or run big on wet tracks, preferable in the distant past, and are not getting hammered today. Not a lot of fruit on that branch, but sometime you get luck.

I also keep track of riders who improve on wet surfaces.

We might as well start a thread for opening day, lots of people will be playing SA this week - have some fun with it.

How would this affect the Malibu? Any insight as to who gets the edge?

I would suspect Lumber Guy and Unbridled Note will be very strong contenders, not only are they proven in Graded Stakes, but they have done well on off tracks.

Good idea Tom except that California doesn't enter horses for MTO.

The MTO angle works quite well at the NYRA tracks. Sorry to hear when turf races are no longer scheduled for the season.

Why did the West's transfer all these horses from Chad Brown to Baffert? There are 3 of them just the 26th alone.Have to think at least 1 pops at a nice price for a Baffert runner.

On rainy days my program lets me take the race off the turf, reverting to only past dirt races. If I have a play in the program, I'll play, if not I pass.

Often, I'll take a turf race off the turf in my program, even when the turf is firm, and many times I get very, very good prices in those races. Most people will only use past turf races to handicap turf races, so this method goes against the grain and offers good value often.

My question is if the races are taken off the grass, then what distances on the main track are they to be run? I understand the mile would probably be a mile but what of the 6.5 downhill races?

Its overcast, but my guess is track fast ON turf tomorrow unless something changes drastically. Good luck to all opening day...

6.5f downhill turf races go 6.5f on the main track. I believe you can go 7f out of chute at SA. Check out Drift King in Race 2 wednesday had a race switched from the downhill turf course to the main track on October 12.

Why are they with Baffert ? It seems they are re-establishing a West Coast presence after being gone for more than a few years.
