View Full Version : Doomsday

The winter solstice will occur at 6:12 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Friday, December 21, three weeks from today. That's when the long count of the Mayan calendar ends and, so some believe, so does the world.

So what difference does it make who won the election? Or the powerball?

Even if we make it past that day, January 1 is looming.

Is anyone here really placing any faith in what has been predicted to happen on that day? Really? Does it really matter if they are right or wrong? Is there anything you can do about it, other than to take advantage of the "doomsday" preppers who are preparing for it?

By the way, if the Mayans are right, see ya on the "other side", if there really is one!! And, if there really is one, then we don't need to worry too much what the Mayans predicted for that day, because then there really is a GOD and the Bible is really the Word of GOD, and the Bible says nobody will know, and that includes the Mayans.

I read an article the other day that was basically some sort of NASA press-release in which they thoroughly ripped the notion to shreds, but claimed to do so because of the pervasive mental anguish that was being caused by the "Doomsday" theorists. The oft-cited example of altruism being performed by the debunkers was the volume of "young people that were suicidal" over the thought of the world ending on December 21.

Really? We're laboring to save them? The people that are on the cusp of killing themselves because they fear the end of the world? I thought these scientists at NASA believed in science and logic.

Well, after checking the schedule, there is a fairly full slate of racing for that day, a Friday, so the day before will likely get a Form, handicap, and then plan on spending the 21st at Los Al or Fairplex. The night before will do the same thing I did on Y2K; Yawn===ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Where did I read something about the Mayan Calendar not reflecting leap years, and therefore, their calendar actually ended a while ago? Does that sound plausible?

Tom

Yes, it does.
I calculated what date would have been the "doomsday" had they used leap years.

He left out the chart. Be patient, Cappy has a chart, graph, or table for almost everything, at least he always has up until now. Expect to see something from him that debunks the whole Mayan theory. ;) :)

How would preventing mass suicide be illogical? History is replete with stories of rising from despair to greatness.

Preventing it may not be illogical, but killing yourself out of despair that the world may not be here for you tomorrow sure is.

Oh brother...who cares? If the Mayans are "right," then there is nothing to be done...in the more likely event that the calendar is being misinterpreted, then we can all sit back and enjoy a hearty laugh at another example of human foolishness.

They don't seem to want to make a commitment for 2013.

Just a remender, the world as they knew it ended along time ago for the Mayans. The Mayan empire was in serious decline by time Colombus arrived and the Spainish finished it off.
What started as a crack pot new age idea in about 2000, has taken off, and now there are some people making serious money off of it. Amazing! P T Barnum would be proud.

Apparently Arthur C. Clarke identified a mountain in Serbia as having special energy. He called Mt. Rtanj the "navel of the world."
Doomsday believers are booking hotels at it's base hoping that it will protect them.
Some believe that it has a pyramid built by aliens inside. (Ooooh.)

Those that are not raise their hands. ;) :) The last time I checked, have not been turned upside down and fallen off into deep space, or one of those other awful things. Guess this means that I still must pay my bills? :( Was going to go to the track today and spend it all, but since I have other obligations to attend to, and since the place is likely to still be there awhile, will skip it. Went yesterday and won a hundred bucks, which puts a dent in those seasonal expenditures. Confirmed this week what I have long known, and that is that there most surely are racing opportunities in spite of New York and California being dark.

Why is that any surprise? Many more voted for Obama. Which is more ridiculous, believing the world will end today or believing Obama would make a better president after his performance over the past 4 years? :bang:
