To what extent would wind resistance vs cover (having a carriage in front) account for losing times being faster than winning times for some horses? Is there maybe an author who deals with this?

Faster losing times can also be attributed to the fact that horses are herd animals, and tend to follow faster leaders by going faster. Chaplin wrote a lot about it, but much of what he wrote is way outdated.

When you have authors proclaiming final times are useless in harness and they are very predictive for tbreds (when normalized into speed figures) then to me it seems something else than herd behaviour must be a factor. I will look at Chaplin, thanks for the tip.

tonight at batavia we had a bigtime headwind for the first 6 races, horses on the lead were cutting the mile--on the backstech, horses 2nd &3rd over were fresh in the strech with the wind no horse passed in the passing lane, it will pay to follow horses tonight that led or went first over!
