My uncle is a huge horse racing fans just as many of us are. I respect his opinion about the sport. He is always talking about how Lure was the greatest turf horse of all time. I am just not old enough to remember this horse. Would anyone care to share what they remember about this horse.

Won back-to-back Breeders' Cup Turf Mile events. Tough horse, the second win was fabulous.

Greatrest turf horse ever? I don't know.....outside of his Ceasar's International, those were his only G1 wins.

I have fond memories of Lure. He was obviously a talented young horse and raced exclusively on dirt into his 3YO season. He was a very fast horse but had distance limitations on dirt. Being a son of Danzig was tried on turf in the Fall. It was obvious he was even more special than on dirt, winning his first turf start by 10+ lengths. I haven't looked at his PPs in a long time and had forgotten he made so many starts as a 4YO and 5YO. I wouldn't rank him as the best turf horse of all time, but with 2 dominant BC Mile wins, he's definitely in my top 10.

I don't know which year it was but in one of his wins (he was 4-1, I believe) he was the only speed in the race, and he controlled the race from the start. Not knocking him at all, just relating the one thing I remember about him.

Lure and Cozzene were big rivals. they took turns beating each other in different racetracks all over the country. they were a great draw.

So much for your poor spelling.

Now, about Lure. Another horse from my "salad days" of racing.

Early 1990s...the golden era as far as my personal racing experience goes.

The thing I will always remember about Lure will not be his back to back Breeders' Cup Mile wins. No, I'll always remember first and foremost Lure's days on the dirt...specifically, his day in 1992 in the Gotham...a race for the freakin' ages! Ending in a dead-heat no less....and if I recall correctly, Lure got bounced off the rail at least once, no?

And a truly great, truly classic call by Tom Durkin...

Lure was an awesome, front-running turf specialist ridden by Mike Smith. He had brilliant speed, and a big turn of foot. He and Star Of Cozzene had numerous battles in the early 90's. Not too many American turf horses like Lure any more.

If I remember right his second bc win was from an outside post in a full field. He had to use his speed early to win that one. It was an impressive race.

The Gulfstream's Breeder's Cup might have been one of the best ever that year. Digging into the brain cells these were some of the highlights.

You had the old plant at GP everyone enjoying the sun.
Baffort won his first BC race with a sprinter off a long layoff, can't tell you what the horses name was. I remember I had Meafara a freak filly against the boys, and she ran 2nd at a huge price.
Lure wire to wire from the inside on a speed favoring course.
AP Indy winning the Classic.

I just remember I had 5 of 7 with a 2nd and a 3rd in the pick 7.

The Breeder's Cup needs to go back to these days, with a short meeting at a different track every year. This SA or CD for 2 years in a row stinks!

He had numerous battles with Paradise Creek as well. Hard to believe Lure is not in the Hall of Fame.

I think I had this as my favorite race or best race or some such thing in one of these threads not that long ago. I can watch this one literally five times in a row, ten times a day, from now until ... the next debut of a half to Zenyatta.

Mikey had a very jubilant celebration after Lure won...i believe it was for the 2nd time in the BC, he was SO pumped up, i love to see that type of jubilation from a jock, its good theatre!

Gotta love it when a jockey celebrates after a horse ran a big time race. My favorite was after Holy Bull blew away the field in the Woodward. Mike was definitely pumped up almost demonstrative in his celebration and who can blame him after a performance like that.

Lure was great IMO and Manila dominated at Classic distance .Two amazing turf stars .I agree though that Manila would get my vote as the best of the turf champions.
At a mile though . Lure might have beat him.

Lure set track records at Gulfstream, Belmont and Churchill Downs. His first BC at GP was an incredible race, speed favoring or not...watch the replay at breederscup.com and see how he pulls away at the 3/8 pole despite setting very fast fractions. Did a similar thing the following year at Santa Anita.

In the Bernard Baruch, when he beat Paradise Creek, I believe he ran every quarter mile either equal to or faster than the previous one, an incredible feat.

He was runner-up for Horse of the Year when Kotashaan won the BC Turf and easily the best horse ever to never win a championship.

PA is right, despite all his turf accomplishments, his most incredible race was probably the Gotham dead-heat with Devil His Due.

On a personal note, he is one of the most gentle horses I ever had the good fortune to be around. When he trained, he would walk to the track each morning, then just stand completely still for 10-15 until he was ready to go.

You got me with a dose of reality .Three track records at different tracks is
huge.
Also , how lucky you are to have spent personal time with him . Nice to know he had a gentle nature despite being so competitive. So I can imagine it hurt when he didn't win the championdhip , but know one can take away the graded stakes wins and track records .

Thanks very much; after he lost his last race in the BC Mile at CD in 1994 (had a wrapped tendon), I went to see him a couple of months later at Claiborne, before they discovered the fertility problem. He was a little more cantankerous then, had his own paddock and was territorial about it. Soon to be 24, he's still at Claiborne living the life of ease that a great horse should.

We know well if 100% he could handle Barathea ;)

gqU57M_Zhh8#!Good thing I searched for "Lure Devil his Due" before writing a complaint post that none had told me about that great race... A chance YouTube suggestion after Flexibility's win got me there but I should've stumbled upon this thread sooner!

A classic race between Lure, Paradise Creek and Saratoga Legend Fourstardave.

Was there that day. One of my favorite days at the Spa. Fourstardave came in third but during the post parade he got a standing ovation. People loved that horse and the crowd gave him more love than Lure and Paradise Creek combined. No doubt, he was in deep that day and took the lead only to have Lure and Paradise Creek run him down. Lure changed tactics that day and still won coming from off of it. Lure was a freak from day 1 but I don't know that he's the best turf horse ever. I kind of don't like that "best ever" talk because its impossible to quantify but at a mile he was pretty F'in good.

While not a turf specialist, John Henry beat some of the best turf horses in training.
