As of today the Huntsville (Alabama) Times, which had a daily circulation of 72,388 copies, while serving a city of 180,105 and a metropolitan area of 417,593, will publish its hard-copy edition only three days a week (Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday). The same applies to the Birmingham News and the Mobile Press-Register. The Times provided this explanation to its readership:

"The Huntsville community is increasingly becoming more digital, and this is true for the media business, too. Many of you, our readers, are now becoming users of our digital products, and you have told us you’re going online and on your phones every day for local news and information. This new digitally-focused organization will bring together the quality journalism of The Huntsville Times and the power of al.com, ensuring communities across Alabama have 24/7 access to what’s happening locally and in their world. The most comprehensive news and information in Huntsville will be at your fingertips at home, online or on the go, offering real-time updates and the ability to participate in the conversations important to you and the community."

Imagine if this had occurred 65 years ago. I can see it now -- a smiling Harry Truman holding up an iPad proclaiming "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN".

No kidding, I just put 59.32 pounds of this week's newsprint mercifully into the recycling can.
