If, during your next hotel stay, you're met with a lock on your door like that pictured above [see the picture at the link], it's time for a conversation with management. This is an Onity HT series lock. Cody Brocious claims that the company has sold 10 million of its various locks to hoteliers, accounting for half of all locks worldwide, and appearing in one in three hotels. Described by Onity as its "flagship product," the HT series lock is its big seller: Brocious reckons there are 4 million HT series locks out there. Why does this matter? It matters because on July 24, Brocious took to the stage at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas to demonstrate how to unlock one in a matter of milliseconds using gear you and I can buy off the shelf from Radioshack for under 50 bucks.

Perhaps using one of those alarms you hang on the inside of the door is not so paranoid after all.

Most of my travel is by car (which means that I will have my 38 caliber Detective Special with me) so my solution is to engage the door chain if there is one; slide a chair in front of the door; and sleep with my revolver at hand.

Effective, so long as the would-be intruder forgot to add a Torx screwdriver to their shopping list. Not just a Torx screwdriver, but a security Torx screwdriver. These are not available at your local hardware store. You have to get them from the manufacturer of your secured device.

A few years back I was given the job of repairing a piece of equipment. The darn thing was held together by these security torx screws. I wound up having to order the screwdriver from the manufacturer. It was free but they would not give me one until I convinced them that my employer was the rightful owner of the equipment. :bang:

If you usually stay at Motel6 like I do to save money, you do what you have to do to get a good night's sleep.

Not sure, but if it's on the bedside table (they have those in M6, right?) and the alarm goes off, or the phone rings,
I don't want to be in the same parish.

Ironic, too, that the M6 chain would hardly have Onity locks installed on their room doors. Way too pricey.

We'll leave the light on for ya........ ;)

I'm with him. Since I travel on a shoestring, on occasion have stayed in dumps that make Motel 6 seem like the Hilton. Besides the usual precautions, a mid frame .38 special rests close at hand. A 125 grain hollowpoint is much more effective in deterring an intruder than is a harsh word.
