Opening Weekend at Santa Anita

The Fall Meet at Santa Anita gets underway on Friday afternoon and this premier meet will be loaded with great racing, all leading up to the Breeders' Cup World Championships on November 2nd and 3rd. The first Saturday of the meet features five Grade 1 races, all key preps for various divisions of the Breeders' Cup. The $250,000 Awesome Again is the key prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic with Game on Dude the headlining name, as he looks to improve on his second place finish last year in the Classic. Game on Dude will have a rider switch, as Rafael Bejarano will take over the reins from Chantal Sutherland, after Game on Dude was caught late in the Pacific Classic. Suggestive Boy and Richard's Kid both could be dangerous in this spot as well, but Game on Dude loves Santa Anita and should be tough if nobody goes with him early on.

The Zenyatta Stakes is for the older fillies and mares and has drawn a field littered with Grade 1 and 2 winners like Joyful Victory, Include Me Out, Star Billing, Switch and many more. The $250,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes has drawn a field of 13 to go the ten furlongs on the grass. Marketing Mix and City to City are two that are sure to get attention, but contention runs deep in this spot with runners like Nereid, Cambina and Go Forth North among others.

The Chandelier Stakes has drawn eleven two year old fillies to go a mile and a sixteenth, including the undefeated Executiveprivilege. Executiveprivilege took home the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, getting up in the final strides to catch Beholder by a nose. Beholder is back in this spot for trainer Dick Mandella as is Salamera, who ships over from Saratoga off a second place finish in the Adirondack. The Grade 1 Frontrunner Stakes has drawn 11 two year olds including Know More, who was second in the Del Mar Futurity and doesn't have to face Rolling Fog this time around. Both Dry Summer and Power Broker are also entered, and they ran 1-2 in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf at Del Mar in their last starts.

The huge Saturday card gets underway at 4:00pm EST.
