Printer issue -- is it the ink I'm using

Have had a brotherMFC J615 inkjet all-in-one for two years now with no issues. Suddenly the print outs are blurry --lines through them. To get anything legible I have to make the document BOLD and increase it to 14 point.

Is this caused by the generic ink cartridges I've been using? I save a ton of money doing so --- even if I to buy a new printer every 2 years, its totally worth it considering how expensive the regular cartridges are.
