Twenty-seven full-time employees received a FedEx letter Sept. 15 indicating the Times had been shut down and advising them of their termination. The building is locked and is currently inaccessible. Not a positive sign for the industry, to say the least. Their website appears to still be active.

I hope they took everything home when they left work.

Too bad, hate it when anyone gets kicked to the curb like that. I used to receive TT in the mail quite a few years ago. It was a good read, and was sent in a timely manner, unlike Horseplayer Magazine.

I hate to see this. IMO the magazine improved dramatically after going to a bi-weekly format with an extensive daily email (anywhere between 15 and 25 pages) to subscribers and a very good website.

It's predecessor, the Thoroughbred Record, was a fantastic weekly magazine and my preference over the Blood Horse. Both were terrific for that matter, covering an era long gone.

Perhaps the Thoroughbred Times should have mirrored the rest of the industry and propped itself up by adding articles on slots and looking for casino advertising revenue.

It seems they have gone the way most daily papers are headed. Sad but true. Myself, I enjoy having the paper in my hands to read.
However, I think the TTimes sucked. We subscribed and got the weekly mags two weeks late most times. Three weeks late often and the 3rd week edition before the 2nd week edition. You get the point. Delivery was lacking. RIP TTimes. It was once a good weekly, but it faded to a poor throw in the trash rag.

Some time ago on this board I asked if anyone would be interested in a FREE multi-colored, online magazine. Only about 135 people were interested...

And this was for a FREE subscription!

Imagine what would have happened if I had asked people to send money!

27 full time employees for a magazine of this size and niche is an awful lot. That's a pretty darn big payroll to sustain with printing costs and mailing costs what they are these days and ad revenue in the toilet because of the internet. I was shocked when I read that the TT had that many people working for it.

I worked for a small(ish) monthly mag from 2001-2009 with a circulation of a little under 15,000. We had 5 part time employees and 2 full time and still couldn't make it. Mag had been published every month since 1948. It's now an online only PDF version, and they're down to 2 full time employees and a handful of unpaid volunteers.

I both agree and disagree. You are right when the TT was a weekly. When they went to bi-weekly the articles became more in depth and less time sensitive. In addition they sent out a daily email called "Today" to subscribers which was anywhere from 15 to 30 pages and had all the information one would want on a daily basis. IMO it was a great blend. I had my $69 check written and ready to mail to renew my subscription when they failed.
