The New York Sires Stakes program began sponsoring races at Yonkers in 1961, and over the years, particularly in that first decade, some weird and whacky things have happened in those races. After fifty years you’d think things would have settled down, but there are still plenty of head-scratchers associated with the program. Last night there were four $85,000 divisions of the Joe Goldstein Trot for three-year-old fillies contested at Yonkers. Brian Sears won his 7,999 race in the second division, guiding 2/5 favorite, Win Missy B, to a front end nose victory in 54.4. This mile broke CR Kay Suzie’s track mark of 56. Then a half-hour later, in the fourth division, Kim Crawford crawled around the track for a 2:00.3 win with Barbara Goldstein, after two of the top three choices jumped. That’s a tick less than six seconds slower than Win Missy B went.Welcome back to the sixties. Round and round we go.

It’s nice to see Yonkers honoring Joe Goldstein by naming this stakes race after him. He worked PR magic for Roosevelt and Yonkers from 1952 until 1968, and then as an independent operator until 1980. He had much to do with making the Roosevelt International into the great race it was. Goldstein is a member of the Communicators Corner of the HOF. (He kept going long after 1980 with the NY City Marathon etc.)
