View Full Version : Does Paul Ryan's Black Ex-Girlfriend Matter?

Apparently not...

Dems still want to reserve the right to call him a racist if need be... :bang:

http://www.theroot.com/blogs/paul-ryan/does-paul-ryans-black-girlfriend-matter

She (the author of this piece) even invokes the specter of Strom Thurmond as an example...funny...no mention of Robert Byrd? Oh that's right, he was a Democrat...

Research has shown that those who hold stereotypes about a particular group of people are unlikely to have those stereotypes altered merely by encountering someone who defies that stereotype. Instead, they are likely to view the individual defying said stereotype as an exception. In other words, it is possible to have a black friend, Asian friend, Hispanic friend or Muslim friend or wife and still exhibit prejudice toward that group. The friend or wife is simply viewed as the exception who is not like the others. So there you have it...he STILL could be racist...

By the way, is there ANY evidence AT ALL that Paul Ryan could possibly be a racist? Why was this article even written? To tell us HE STILL COULD BE, even with the ex-black girlfriend...

Holy Mother of God is this insanity... :bang:

(PS. For another stellar example of journalism from the same author regarding Ryan, take a gander at the following: http://www.theroot.com/blogs/barack-obama/four-facts-tell-us-how-paul-ryan-feels-about-black-voters )

Being called a racist nowadays is an honor.
It means you are on the right path.

I don't think Ryan is a racist.

But I also think you can be prejudiced against a group of people, and still date (or be friends with) a member of that group. I don't think the paragraph that was highlighted is incorrect at all.

Was his black girlfriend even a story before this nobody made it one?

It was nice of her to cast him in such a positive, accepting, hip light for those of us that couldn't find a reason to bring race into the VP selection.

(Somebody get a drum roll ready)

Define prejudiced against a group of people?

They recognize the differences in cultural upbringing, they hate them, what?

Does Paul Ryan's Black Ex-Girlfriend Matter?

Who in all honesty on this board would want to be held accountable for who they went out with as "girl friends"(?) whatever color of the rainbow?

Let's see a show of hands.

I highlighted it to show the depths some will go to in order to draw blood from a stone.

"Let's see, he had at least one black girlfriend, so people are going to see this as evidence of him not being a racist, so lemme see if I can somehow plant a seed of doubt to keep the dream alive..."

I wonder if similar research exists which shows you're not necessarily a racist even if you were once a member of the Ku Klux Klan, like now dead DEMOCRAT and (seemingly lifelong) Senator Robert Byrd, who, upon his death, was praised by other high ranking Democrats like Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Obama, Bill Clinton, etc. To be fair, lots of high ranking Republicans also had praise and kind words for the former klansman upon his death...I just wonder if Ms. Goff ever had anything to write about "The White Wonder" Robert Byrd and his amazing transformation.

I guess he would be kind of like the opposite of Paul Ryan in Goff's world. A guy you had to just KNOW was racist to the core in the beginning, but somehow was able to shake those long held and ingrained beliefs. Such as that is, it only demonstrates that there is hope for Paul Ryan after all, even if it's eventually proven he's a full-blown racist son-of-a-bitch.

Out of curiosity (I know...thread drift), if there was currently a sitting member of Congress, a Republican Senator in fact, who was found out to be a member of the KKK as a youth, but now, like Byrd did, claims to be enlightened and "reborn," what are the chances this Senator would still be in Congress 24 hours from now?

I'd put the conservative estimate at ZERO chance.

You're poking at ghosts. Anyone fitting your scenario would be half past dead.

Besides, are you suggesting that either party has the power to force a sitting member to resign?

Besides, are you suggesting that either party has the power to force a sitting member to resign?I didn't realize the Klan didn't exist anymore...you're saying the possibility of a 60yo Senator having been a Klan member 40 years ago is that remote? I beg to differ.

As each House has the authority to expel its own members without involving the other chamber, expulsion has been the method used for removing Members of Congress. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment

EXTREMELY. By the late 60's early 70's the Klan was not something with which to be associated, unless your name was Bubba and/or dumb as a rock.

I believe a 2/3rds majority is required for expulsion...So the actions of one party wouldn't cut it. Also, impeachment isn't an option for members of congress.

Lookie you, coming to a 'decision' Ryan isn't a racist.

How 'bout cj's dad? Or Boxcarr? Or me?

Love your litle bit with the "I'll let you know when I smell a racist" routine.

I don't think the Pace Master was referring to expulsion, it was resignation. Of course a party could produce enough pressure to achieve that quickly. It's happened.

Nothing is funnier than your continual desperation to try and be the coolest guy here. Nothing.

But just for the sake of not ruining another thread, what about my original post here do you disagree with? Extra points if you can answer it honestly, if you even know what that is anymore.

Don't forget Chris Dodd heaped on the accolades for Byrd while he was still alive. That's okay, but what Trent Lott did was outrageous. Yeah.

David Duke was a member of the House and ran for the Senate. I do not believe he was asked to resign. Nor should he have been.

David Duke was never in Congress. He was in the Louisiana State House. 2 seconds of research and you might get a post right.

I misread the biography. He ran for US Senate and US House. It has been a bad couple of days. A really bad couple of days.

Wish I would have read this reply before I quoted your apology in the other thread. There are times, more often than not, that you seem to be a pretty good guy. This post is one of them. Go in the other thread, offer a better worded apology to Mike and the others, and lets hope that better days are ahead. I'd rather see the guy who I rarely agree with, but who has a sense of humor about things, than the guy who I've been so confrontational with lately.
