Del Mar makes horseracing history with Pick 5 pool
by Ed Zieralski Aug. 15, 2012Del Mar made horseracing history today in the first race when nearly $3 million was bet on the 50-cent Pick 5.

Andy Asaro, a handicapper and horseplayer advocate who calls for lower takeout on wagers, said Del Mar’s Pick 5 pool was the largest exotic pool to start a racing card ever, including Breeders’ Cup and Kentucky Derby days.

Asaro praised Jack Liebau and Bernie Thurman of Betfair Hollywood Park for “taking a shot with this bet.” Otherwise, Asaro said “it never would have happened.”

Going into the third race, the start of the Pick 6, the pool topped $1.5 million, giving Del Mar over $4.5 million in total pools for the Pick 5 and Pick 6 wagers. It wouldn't have happened without Andy as well.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but for those that don't know, that is andymays' real name.

My being new here I didn't realize you were being sarcastic so please excuse my earlier posted reply with the links.

I made a reply and posted what I did in an attempt to be helpful ( not being aware you were being sarcastic )

Sorry.

Then he must be extremely sad that this record was broken @ Del Mar.

Del Mar makes horseracing history with Pick 5 pool

Anybody know why one of the most popular bets in the U.S.A is not available @ N.Y.R.A tracks? I'm guessing it makes too much sense.

Try a search, there has been plenty of talk about this.

He's not sad at all. He and Roger Way were the ones that suggested the Player's Pick 5 in the first place.

While Andy can be controversial with his methods, and is relentless with his criticism of the TOC and sometimes the CHRB, there's no doubt that he loves CA racing.

And no doubt about his dislike of Del Mar

Since they put in the low takeout P5 we get along pretty well. I still dislike the surface.

Is he saying that you can't bet the CA P5 from NY tracks or is he saying, why don't they have a 50 cent P5 at NY tracks? If it's the former, good question. If it's the latter, then yeah, that's been discussed quite a bit.

Excerpt:

"People got engaged in the betting program early, and it worked out well."
Bettors have taken to the pick five because of its low takeout (14 percent). By comparison, the pick six has a 23.8 percent takeout.

The horsemen made $92,187 for purses from Wednesday's pick five betting and $92,418 from the pick six, even though the pick five pool was nearly $1 million larger.

"We were giving away Big Macs for a dime," said Ernst, who added Del Mar made $122,524 from the two wagers Wednesday. "There is a lot of interest in the pick five, and you have to give your customers some kind of deal."

Some handicapping groups want lower takeouts on more bets in California and say more people will bet on the state's thoroughbreds if that happens. Adding an early pick four, lowering the takeout on daily doubles and maybe eliminating quinellas will all be discussed after the meet is over, said Ernst.
"We will sit down with the (Thoroughbred Owners of California) at the end of the meet when we have all the betting data and discuss what is good for everyone," Ernst said. "We're open to a lot of things, but we want to be able to make a more informed decision."

Although the money poured in on this popular pic 5, and many people actually got a return(pic 5 payoff was pretty low really).....there was a whole lotta syndicate wagering on the outcome of those races, and I am pretty sure a number of those groups weren't all that satisfied with Wednesdays results!

I'm just sayin'

Anyone in this forum hit the wager, and, if so, did you make or lose on the proposition?

full disclosure, I bet two 'fitty cent' tickets, just for fun. No joy.

For instance, I just typed in "Why No Pick 5 at NYRA Tracks" into the Google Search Box and got back highly relevant results. Sometimes it gives links to the "text archive" which looks a little funky, but there is always a link on those pages at the top to "View Full Version."

If only some of the online touts who get bashed here all the time would do that, it would completely silence the bashers...

Touchy on this board sometimes. I was the one posed the question. I think if anyone bothered to respond like K did, that would be the proper thing. One response to my question then, anyone else?

Again, thanx for the response, K

I hope you cashed out man. No need to prove anything as I just don't care.

It's just funny to me when people redboard huge scores to complete strangers. Call me crazy.
