Beware the Euro shippers.....

Dale Romans looks very strong in the Secretariat with 3 good horses.
However, the Million, Bev D, and the new St. Leger race all could go to Euro trained horses. These races are tailor made for them.

Good news for the Euros: hard rains this morning in the NW suburbs of Chicago and a forecast high temp of only 70 for Saturday.

The race that is in between is probably the best betting and most competitive race on saturday's card IMO. It certainly makes the Late Pk4 more challenging than putting the St. Leger or Secretariat in the sequence.

Anyone have a link or know where I can watch some of Bayrir's previous races?

I would try to You Tube them. Most of the European graded stakes are up there. I haven't had a chance to check Bayrir yet but wouldn't be shocked if he gave Silver Max all he could handle.

Catalano told Marcus Hersh of DRF that Vertiformer will run in the Million. A little shocked at this decision.

Me too.I thought after Jakkalberry and Zuider Zee he had as good a chance as any with the rail in the St Ledger and 10-1 was more than fair.In the Million 20-1 might be an underlay.

First of all ... this is one of my favorite days on the racing calendar every year.

Secondly, this is a great great handicapping occasion IMO.

Thirdly, these are my picks (my main bet is on the Pick 5, though)

race 7:IOYA BIGTIME
race 8: BAYRIR
race 9: FREEDOM REIGNS
race 10: I'M A DREAMER
race 11: COLOMBIAN

watch out for John Gosden!

It would never make me not bet a horse of his especially if you liked that particular horse, but it is slightly negative IMO that Gosden is not present at Arlington.

Good point (didn't know that he wasn't).

Another slight negative is that he will happily send out horses just to pick up big prize money for second or third (Zuiderzee being a good example).

His stable is in brilliant form, on the other hand.

The Pick 5 paid quite handsomely, considering the results. And it certainly did relative to the Pick 6 which required an extra winner @ 3/1 but only paid marginally more!

Is there a more fortunate horse in training than Little Mike? Could they possibly have gone any slower early on?

Turf races are often run that way. But with only 1 E horse, someone should have pressed the pace a bit, I would think.

When Treasure Beach is on, he's a pace player. But of course its probably asking too much for Spencer to do the right thing and put the horse into the race.

I had only 1 horse who had the early speed to press, truly press, the pace on the 4, but would have had nothing left, that was the 10, Cherokee Lord. Nobody else could have pressed the pace if the 4 really wants the lead, too much speed.

With some really rudimentary judgements about the running styles of the European horses gleaned from the comment lines I had the race a 23 x 1.But Little Mike being a pure E8 horse it made the rest of the speed moot.I liked Afsare because I deemed him a presser. The pacesetter was one of those horses that just strands closers. It was an interesting race.I've become infatuated with the turf the last year or so,especially speed on the turf. This was fun!

Are you saying the best horse wins every race?

No, the horse in today's race, matching up best against today's field and pace makeup, etc., IMO, is the best horse. Best speed figure horse, best man-made class horse, etc., doesn't necessarily mean the best horse today.

I don't have to explain that to you, do I?

I get your point, but what valuist said is a common phrase in racing and more valuable for future betting. In this case, I actually don't agree with him in this one case. Maybe if the runner up behaved better before the race he would have won, but he always does that. Long term though, the game would be boring as hell if all results could be taken at face value.

It was more than the bad behavior before the race. It was the fact Little Mike crawled and the off the pace horses were severely disadvantaged.
If we can take the times of the Secretariat and Million at face value (which may be a big leap of faith), we see how strong the closers in the Million ran:

Sec: 49 1:13 1/5 2.02 9/10
Million :50 1:15 2:02 2/5

Nearly 2 full seconds slower to 6f, yet still finished faster.

I know they did, but the Secretariat wasn't exactly stout either. I guess I'm saying while the others may be better than Little Mike, the race wasn't very strong so I won't be looking to bet any of them back when they spread out around the country.
