How many Maiden 25 and 32 claiming races were won by first time starters in California - A tracks please. In the last year or 2 preferably.

Looks to me like 90/686 races isince 1/1/2002:

BM 14
DMR 9
GG 13
HOL 26
SA 28

I am probably missing a few but this should be in the ballpark.

Does it matter whether the race won was a sprint or a route?

I'm just looking things up; not really sure what the value of this information is.

Of the 90 1st time winners, only 5 were in route races. It looks like 70% or so of the races were sprints and 1st timers are much more likely to show up in a sprint race than in a route race.

First time starter winners in mdn. claimings usually come from the same barns/owners who specialize in this move.
Some owners never risk anything that can run in a mdn. clm first time out, others will.
I would have to think a study of trainers and their owners would yeild interesting results on this subject.
