So, the word is that Romney is close to announcing his running mate.
Seems that it's down to three choices, and it's very close between them.

Who do you like, or do you think there could be a last minute surprise?

Portman or Pawlenty are complete zeroes who add nothing to the ticket, so it's guaranteed that it will be one of those two.
Rubio is the obvious play here on so many levels, so I'm sure that it wont be Rubio.

Ryan would be a good play too, so that makes him a longshot.

The main problem is with Romney at the top of the ticket, but that ship has sailed.

well this just in, announcement to be tomorrow, and according to NBC,

NBC News: Sources indicate Rep. Paul Ryan is the VP choice.

if that is true then it's a good move by Romney, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Battleground states looking better for Obama. Last week the Romney campaign SINNED announcing Romney a "socialist" health care advocate by bringing up his Romneycare in Mass. OOPS!!

Now picking Ryan will doom the rethugs in states like Florida and PA and Ohio.

Double OOPS! Hope you gentlemen are ready for four more.

Assuming Ryan being named, of course, is not a done deal... I voted other and here's why:

I think Romney should pick a veep who could actually win the ticket a state or two.

As simple as this might sound, most veep picks have not fallen into that specific category (winning the veep's home state doesn't qualify) in modern history.

One of the last times someone was picked primarily to win a state or two was Jack Kennedy picking his hated rival LBJ since JFK desperately needed to win both Texas and the south to win the presidency. LBJ delivered. That was in 1960 for god's sake!

This is why I believe Romney needs either Marko Rubio or Chris Christie as a running mate.

Rubio/Christie wins Romney Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and possibly states like New Jersey and New Mexico. While I believe Romney is stronger in these states than John McCain was going in last out, if either of those two guys win those states for the Romney column then Obama is toast big time. I can't say 'for sure' the others could do the same for the ticket.

I think Paul Ryan helps Romney in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, but those states aren't too difficult for Romney to win, even if CNN and Chris Mathews continue their lies that Obama is winning those states.

Net-net... Ryan will be a very good choice; Rubio or Christie great choices; Pawlenty and Portman poor choices, and Condi Rice and/or Jeb Bush very horrible choices.

Democrats fear Ryan and Rubio because they are young and extremely articulate in presenting (alleged) conservative ideas. They also fear Christie because he'll Jersey Shore Joe Biden in any debate when that clown Biden tries to slip in some cheap shots. Plus, Christie won't allow 'the press' to dictate what the campaign's real issues are nor will he let them get away with any of their usual false assumption-directed questions.

I don't think they fear Pawlenty or Portman. They do hope and pray for a Condi Rice or Jeb Bush to be named because in those two Obama could again blame his own incompetent failures on Bush-Cheney-Haliburton.

My thoughts on Ryan's selection doesn't change:

he is basically a very good choice but will not win a state that Romney really needs to win.

Romney would have won Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Ohio on his own, imo.

I just hope Ryan has the onions to fight the ugly campaign run by Obama and Biden and their expected vulgarity -- in all matters beyond his fiscal and budget expertise.

I believe he does have the onions and will school them both. He's not afraid to speak his mind and he will be heard.

Ryan IS the right choice but if Romney wins in November, he'd better be prepared to face off against Ryan in 2016.

That said... I'm not too happy with the choice but hey... if you are fighting a ideological campaign it makes sense to trump out the big ideologicial gun.

I was for Christie but I'm good with this choice. Anyone who can make the infantile left apoplectic works for me.

Best line in his acceptance speech, "If you have a small business, you DID build it!"

Very good call elysiantraveller.

I would also like to take the opportunity to go on the record too, if I may. A sort of future book bet opinion.

In a Romney Administration, Chris Christie will be the Attorney General of the US.

I know a GOP political operative from New Jersey and when the 'Christie for Vice President' baloney was bandied about a while back, I asked him, what's the story?

His answer surprised me: he said that Christie doesn't want to be Vice President that he actually wants to be Attorney General.

It should be noted that when Christie was a prosecutor for the Justice Department in New Jersey, he never lost a single case.

In the unlikely but not totally impossible chance of Christie helping Romney win New Jersey, you can be assured that Christie could conceivably get any job he wants in the Cabinet.

And as Atty General, he doesn't need to lose 100 pounds nor worry how he 'looks' to the media. :)
