According to the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C., the LinkedIn page (http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=191831573&locale=en_US&trk=tyah) attributed to Sheikh Hamdan Bin (FAZZA) Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and son of Sheikh Mohammed, is a scam in the Nigerian email tradition. The page is connected to dozens and dozens of people involved in the Thoroughbred industry and proposed business relationships with the Sheikh apparently require an upfront fee paid to his representative in California for processing the required paperwork and for tax purposes.

When the phony "Sheikh" requested a LinkedIn connection with me I told him I had done some consulting work for his father in the late 1990s. He asked if I could do a similar service for him after which he laid out the protocols including the upfront payment. I immediately contacted the embassy and they confirmed the obvious.

Online social networking may yet be the downfall of human civilization.
