View Full Version : Spreadsheet Tool for Exacta players.

Lately, I've been using a spreadsheet "App" to decide whether to box3, box2, keybox or wheel my picks.
I believe this sheet can improve a player's ROI by cutting down on the No-value bets.
Some Harness Exacta players here might find it useful. (It's limited to 10 horse fields but can be used for T-breds with some changes)

I will put this sheet up as an attachment if there is enough interest and if I can get some feed back on its use.
I need some beta testers :) ...I will not sell it but post it for free use.

Cost?.....It's free
What Tracks?..............................Most USA tracks plus Mohawk, Woodbine
Do I need an account or password?....No, It uses freely available WEB data
Do I have to handicap the Race?......Actually No, You can watch if the crowd faves are overlays in the Exacta pool or examine any 3 picks using current Toteboard odds. (What are the gray horse paying? :)) If you don't want to create a line for your top 3 picks, it will use the current tote line.

What does it do????

It keeps a running history of the Exacta Will-Pays for Crowd Faves and also Your picks as the race approaches Posttime, showing which combos are poor bets. BTW, I am aware of the big objection to trying to use toteboard odds because of the last flip changes but I have found that patterns do exist. Poor bets tend to stay poor and bets "on the cusp" usually get pounded but others show promise. Finding what works at the track you play is all part of the game.

I've found that I can trust looking at prices, up to 2-3 minutes beyond the first appearance of "0 MTP" and still use the board info in getting a bet down. This is where patterns become useful.

The layout looks a bit confusing but some rows can be cleared if not wanted. At the very top you set the Track and Race number. Click on either of 2 Red Update buttons and the next 12 rows will show the usual tote information plus an alternate Win odds line created by "How the horse is being used" in Exacta pool. (This can sometimes spot barn money trying to hide in Exacta Wheels). 2 other rows give Place bet Minimum Prices and Dr Z Place pool Expectancies by Win/Place inefficiencies.

Now for the good part...

The bottom half of the spreadsheet has current Exacta Will Pays for Crowd Faves and Your Picks for the 6 combos of Exacta Plays...a/b, b/a, a/c, c/a, b/c, c/b. Poor paying bets to avoid are shown in red font. The algorithm uses Discounted Harville calculations based on Win pool amounts to determine "Good vs Poor" Bets. For the users Picks/Odds it includes an adjustable "safety" factor. By watching the "RED" bets you can decide to go for 3box (all white font) or 2box or Part wheel. If you "Update" once a minute the history of the Exacta Will Pays will be recorded so you can judge if any patterns are emerging and wether a wager is called for.

I am not going to spend the time and effort to write up the "Manual Details" unless there's enough interest.

The attachment shows The Meadows Race #7 today where I was able to limit my bet to the 1-4 Box.
I placed the bet at the 5927$ point in time...(It hit)

I'll be interested in any comments/suggestions.

thx for the links
the Harville approach (even discounted Harville) is one of the weaker methods to predict 2nd and 3rd place finishers (Henery is better ?) but for the purpose of this sheet, it provides a workable base for comparison of the exacta combinations in the 3 box.

Ok, seems there's enough interest...

This spreadsheet requires the features of Microsoft Office 2007 for Conditional Cell Formatting and the function "IFERROR". Also you will need to allow Macros to run.
Open Excel 2007 and click the Office button
Click the Trust Center button on the left.
Select Trust Center Settings. at the bottom right
choose Macro Settings...then.enable all macros

This Forum doesn't allow attachments of Excel files of type .xlsm so I have changed the extension to ".xls". After downloading (by right clicking the attachment) change the name back to ExactaWatch.xlsm.

MAKE A COPY of THE FILE to fall back on if necessary.

You can now open the spreadsheet. There are no hidden pages or cells, the macro code is unlocked.
The only cells that the user should change are in yellow, (Your Picks and/or Odds and 2 constants).
Lambda is the adjustment for Harville Discount, OLEF is a safety margin for "Minimal Accepted WillPays"
Cells are not locked, so keep the changes limited to the yellow cells.

Select a track from the drop down box and set the current Race number. Click on either Red Update Button (there are 2 so you can minimize the window and still see one). Data takes about 5 secs to come in. A message box will appear if unsuccessful but not all errors are trapped as yet.

There are 2 other settings, a check box for "Keep Exacta WillPays" allows you to suspend the grid update if you want to check another track and then come back to the grid history.

The other option setting... "For My Picks" ...tells the program which Odds to use for The picks entered in the yellow cells for your top 3 picks. If you leave the cells for MYodds blank then the sheet will use current toteboard odds for those picks. If you're going to enter your own odds for MyPicks, then try to be realistic meaning, MyOdds1 would be the lowest .... 0.5 - 2.5 (enter numbers as decimal odds). MyOdds 2 and 3 would be in the range of 2.0-6.0 either close or more widespread. This setting might be a little confusing until you get the hang of it. For now "Use My Odds" means use the numbers presently in cells L14:M14 for the odds on my picks.

I'm having a bit of a problem with Excel "forgetting" how to sort the faves ?? Need to Check Fave1 for most win money for a while, until I get this resolved.
error when web data in midst of changing to the next race

other known issues

Batavia Buffalo Lebanon are not always available
Pompano reports numbers differently (after-takeout) and $1 will pays?
others may also have 1$ exactas (need list)

In the top right corner is a list of available or soon to be available tracks.
The T-Bred tracks are not in the drop list at this time.

Not all errors are trapped, refresh should correct but may have to revert to last save

The running history of Crowd favorites' exacta prices (green grid) is not that useful.
.. the 2nd and 3rd faves (sometimes no.1), will most likely be changing.

I'm creating this sheet from a larger version the robot uses, so I don't have as much testing on this one as I would like, but let's see how it goes.

What follows is RaysRobot top3 picks/odds for today, for placing into cells I14-N14 as practice. :)

the file extension is .XLSM and you need Office 2007 or later

hope this helps, if not I'll put up a 2003 version since I have 2 errors to correct already.

This sheet should work on older Excel programs and the short fields (5&6) display correctly

No need to change any file name.

Ray2000

Attached is the final write of ExactaWatch. It is in Excel Version 2003 so no extension name change is needed.
It can be used as is. It will open in compatibility mode for newer versions of Excel.

Repeat..USER should ONLY CHANGE Track/RaceNo and the values in the YELLOW cells

1. Corrected errors generated by field sizes smaller than 7

2. Removed Vernon (not available) added Philadelphia (Chester/Philly are the same track)

3. Added a cell showing time lapsed from 1st appearance of "0 MTP" when refreshing

4. Handles Crowd favorite #1 if there's been a change.

5. The row for Dr Z percentages is formatted to only turn green if Expectation > 115% and Tote Odds <10
..In theory, a Ziemba 100 means no place pool inefficiency, 100+ gives positive expectation on place bets.
Searching this Forum for "Dr Z" will turn up numerous discussions on this system.
The complete Dr Z system incorporates Kelly wager sizing/dutching calcs. (Not included in this sheet)

BTW... The sheet has the data for Harrahs R5 today where a 1/5 shot #1 gets beat.
Crowd Exacta 2-1 shows up White ;) . Robot didn't use the deuce. :(

Here is the Robots oddsline for some possible Ex box bets today, Friday 10th
You can copy copy columns 3 thru 8 / paste in NotePad / recopy/paste to spreadsheet

Thx guys

Keep in mind the purpose of this sheet for watching the Exacta Board is to eliminate some bets rather than finding them. Cutting your cost (number) of tickets will of course, reduce your Return (strike rate) as well but hopefully your Return On Investment will go up and you can raise your base percent of capital.

I put in rows for the usual tote info, alternate win odds and the Dr Z place watch (which many believe is just hokum anyway) but the way I use this spreadsheet is to crop the Excel window down so just the blue grid and my picks show. Set the track and race and refresh about once a minute, starting about 5 MTP. Payoffs starting and staying in the "Red" usually end up in the "Red" and just aren't worth the risk, for me anyway. It depends on which odds you assign to them, the track and maybe the phase of the moon. My main ADW account allows Queuing bets up in a preview form, so I set up the possibilities... Box abc, Box ab or ac or cb, Kybox a w/bc etc and wait and watch to about 2-3 mins beyond "0 MTP" then select best way of betting and submit.

As for setting the odds on your picks ...
1/1 - 2/1 - 4/1 is not a bad start for a Pick 1 you really like
or 1 - 3 - 3 if pick 2 and 3 are a toss up.
or 2 - 2 - 3 if you like them all about the same
or you can use current board odds, but I haven't followed that as closely.

The Overlay margin is set at 125%.
You can raise that constant (OLEF) which will set a higher bar for acceptable bets in the blue grid.

Good Luck and I hope you find it saves some $$.

Actually I get the same endorphin hit when only losing $4 instead of $12 :D

A request from a T-Bred player prompted this update. The Spreadsheet can be used if the field size of the runners is less 11. Also, the calculations are using generic Takeouts of 17% Win/Place/Show and 20% on Exactas, so if you want, you can update the numbers in range "AB5:AC60" on sheet "Imports" to have more accuracy. It probably won't change output that much.
To add a track not covered, PM me.

The attached .xls file also has a change to adjust for the imported data having a changed format, causing an impolite exit. :)

Anyone able to get tbred tracks to work on the program?

Ray2000
11-10-2012, 01:16 PM
The spreadsheet is operating OK for some Tbred tracks on my machine, but I found a bug when selecting the option .. "Use Toteboard Odds" for Players Picks (not Players own line).

Also, some TBred Exactas at ebet are being reported to the dollar base not $2 (Aqueduct)

If I can find a method to determine Exacta base amount from Win prices and probables, I'll put up a new version. Until then this latest file should work on $2 payoffs, but you will have to ignore 1$ prices.

Got it working in compatibility mode. If I get a 11 percent rebate how can I change the olef to get more actual overlays? I lowered my olef to 115.

Ray2000
11-11-2012, 06:38 AM
teddy

The spreadsheet is a bit clumsy in that it's displaying possible overlays for 2 different scenarios. The green columns are showing Harville probs vs tote probs for the top 3 crowd picks. The Blue columns are using any 3 player picks and either the current tote odds or the player's own (manually entered) oddsline for those 3 picks.

Harville's original method was altered and later called Discounted Harville, to allow for the 'Silky Sullivan' effect,
(The horse will win or beat nobody, meaning, small chance to Place)
http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35264

People argue over how much discount should be applied so I put this in as an adjustment but it only applies to the green columns, the top 3 crowd choices. (BTW, a discount of 1.0 is the original Harville, .78 seems to be the accepted discount)

For the blue columns, the players picks, I used the original Harville formula and then as an after thought before posting, put in the OLEF (Overlay Exacta Factor) which is simply a multiplier for the $2 Acceptable Minimum Prices on Players picks. Lowering the number in .1 increments like 1.15...1.0...0.9...0.8 will show more prices "in the black" but doubtful overlays.

The latest version (posted in reply #25) was saved with Aqueduct race 3 numbers and that has the $1 base problem. Use only on tracks giving $2 probables until I correct that problem or set OLEF to .5 ?

teddy
11-11-2012, 10:10 AM
Can we double the exacta number and compare to the h olay number to decide. Or do we need to c hange the olef factor first.

You cant be till they are loading at least, I saw quite a few go from great overlays to no overlay after the start. Even on heavy favorites.

Ray2000
11-11-2012, 10:54 AM
Doubling the payoff would be best, that's why I'm trying out a "Work-Around" solution where the program will look at the average exacta payoffs compared to the winpool-based Harvilles on the lowest 6 exactas and if way too low will convert to 2$ payoffs. Need to test it out for awhile this PM.

I made this sheet from the one I use to get away from Log-In requirements. Some missing tracks and no base price info is the trade off.

teddy
11-11-2012, 11:45 AM
Definitely something at work looking at overlays too.. 5-1 with 6-1 overlays seemed to stay overlays. Just my one night of watching.. did catch a nice one on the first try though.

Ray2000
11-11-2012, 01:22 PM
Ok
My 1st method at setting the base price on Exacta Probables sucked.

This version goes back to setting the multiplier by a lookup table and hope each track stays constant in the imported data.

I have the correct numbers for Churchill, Calder and Aqueduct entered.
For other tracks the table will need updated as they come available.

go to sheet Imports, ...cell range AA5 thru AA60
and set the multiplier for any new track
You can also update the Take-outs there. (currently using generic for T-Breds)

Originally designed for Harness so field size is limited to 10

The way I use this sheet is mostly for structuring the Exacta bets on my picks.

If my top 3 picks are showing 5 or 6 combos, ie ab,ac bc,ba ca in the black
...then I go for the $2 3horse box Exacta.

If only 2 like bc, cb then a $3 dollar 2 box Exacta is called for.

Like wise for Key boxing like ab, ac, ca, ba are black and bc, cb are red...key "a"

Good Luck

go back to sheet "ToteBoard"....Save the sheet

for other tracks, check ebet results for the track in question and the code letters will be in url address.

Thanks, can the colors be changed? The red on green hurts my old eyes.

Ray2000

You can change any of the cells fill color you would like.

Font color on some cells is conditionally set to red (if less than acceptable price)

You can select "Manage Conditional Rules" and set format to your liking.

For the sake of completeness, I'll put this info in this thread, but it really wasn't worth investigating.

The Harville formula

Pj|i = Pj/(1-Pj)

for Exacta probability (P) to hit based on win pool amounts was later adjusted (Discounted) by the addition of a power factor, Lambda. (see 'Lo, V.S.Y. and Bacon-Shone, J')

The accepted value for Lambda was .76 for the T-Bred race data set they used.

I looked at 32,000 harness races at 46 tracks this year and the best Lambda for comparing closeness of fit of actual Exacta Payoffs to Discounted Harville predictions was 0.90. The fit was very close, see below.

The track differences and takeouts had little effect on this constant so if anyone's using this spreadsheet, you can change cell R24 to 0.9

.

Too late to edit

The Harville Ex formula is Pj|i = PiPj/(1-Pi)

I'm not sure, mike, never had to deal with them in Harness.
The T-bred forums have posted on this topic in the past.

The Spreadsheet was designed for Harness tracks, where 7 to 10 program entries are common. I could redo it for T-Breds (if there's enough interest), to handle those larger fields.

The attached updated version has Gulfstream and Tampa but I had to remove (over write) Turf Paradise and Golden Gate to fit those 2 tracks in.

IT only works with eBet tracks. I did this to get away from using TwinSpires where one has to log in to get to the tote.

mabred,

I never wrote a tutorial other than what is contained in this thread. Guess I should add a Help Page. If you have any specific problem, let me know.

is there a way of recording the history of the win odds, alt odds and dr z place everytime you update. with the conditional colors at that recorded time.

thanks.

Not automatically, sorry.

You could copy cells A8 thru L11 then

go down to about cell A50 and Paste Special Values.... ( Home>Paste>PasteValues in Excel 2007-10 )

Go back and select the same range for copying format and 'paint' the copied data below to make reading easier. Formatting that range only needs to be done once. Then repeat pasting below that for the next update.

BTW

The Dr Z method says..quote

"Bets are made when the estimated expected return on a dollar place or show
wager is greater than 1.14 for major racetracks and 1.18 for minor racetracks and when the
odds are less than or equal to 8-1."

On this sheet, the values (in row 11) for Place % Expectancy turn Green if > 1.15 but do not take into account the 8-1 odds criteria.

It's not just a range of cells that needs expanded, the macro does a 'sort' on 10 to find the crowd's top 3. It will need changed also.

I've been meaning to redo it anyway to add some other features, so I'll put up an expanded version in a few days.

I have some formulas that can address the sorting part which would eliminate the need to sort if you want, I already tried it on your imports sheet.

Thx for the suggestion, jjmartin

Thinking back when I was on version 1.0, I briefly tried using ranking formulas and was having trouble with the imported data not being placed in the same range or not being in all text or number values. (can't remember which) at which point I went to doing the job in VBA. Also, that's the reason for all the 'offset' function use in the formulas.

I've been down loading the live twinspires straight and exacta pools for about two years and have hundreds if not a thousand or so excell files.
most files were down loaded with 1 min to post.
here is a bit of a file sample..
Not betting, while looking for a long term profit, has saved me thousands of dollars, and I think it will continue that way for some time :)

The board watching spreadsheet that I use also goes to twin for the data. I put this sheet up (using ebet) for people not familiar with importing data, so as to get away from requiring an account and logging in, password. etc. Twin has a better slate of tracks and more reliable data table format. (and they give the base price 1$ or 2$ for Exacta probs)

ok, I used the last file you posted on 12-5-12, added code to imports sheet range Q53:Q72, R53:R72 and moved the favorites named ranges to the S column and added a vlookup code to those ranges. Seems that excel is able to detect the numbers as numbers although they look like text (range E53 and down). The code I added will cover 20 horses if needed. I did not change anything in the VBA.

PS: the formula was designed to compensate for any ties in the pool so as to not confuse the vlookup; the rank will therefore not have any ties but will rather rank the 2nd and any subsequent ties in ascending order according to the post.

Done for today and won't be around tomorrow...

I'll make this update available as a beta test, still not complete, I want to see if file size is too big for PACE. May have to use a file-sharing site.

File name change ---> BoardWatch.xls

It's good for 15 starters

Has drop down selector for Harness or T-Bred

Saves Win Pool history (amounts)

Has an auto refresh (use "q" to exit, adjustable interval)

Uses JJ's formulas, (had to relocate them, macro was clearing that region)

Still needs some Track Take-Out's, base multiplier for Probables and a Help/Info page.

and a way to stop the letter "q" from appearing in cell A1 :D

JJ

the formulas failed on some scratch races. see Penn National R3

You can look at completed races up to 6 am the following day.

might be because I have the sheet saved in 2003 format for people using older Excel
that version doesn't have the function.... iferror()

The attached version goes back to macro sort method.

Ray, it was the scratches - I had the formula so it would count the number of entries starting from cell E53 which is post #1 from the pool side, I changed it to count only from the entries side (starting cell D53) so now the scratches won't effect it and I removed IFERROR, that should fix it.

It's not just an address change. The track codes are different and this spreadsheet wouldn't work at all with Twin.

If you're familar with building spreadsheets and Visual Basic you might find this PACE thread helpful for Twin.

Hopefully this is the final version :)

If anyone finds serious errors let me know.

I've updated all Takeouts, as best as web data will allow

Verified many but not all Exacta Base Prices $1 or $2

Corrected some errors, max entries is now truly 15 not 12

Added a "Help" page

Added "Average" Place Prices in addition to Minimum Place Prices

Added Wind speed and Wind direction, relative to Stretch Direction.

Added BridgeJumper Alert

I wonder if Jumpers are using the Place Pool now because of no rebates on negative Show Pools.

Yes, that ebet change has messed me up on getting current race results WITH Scratches.
I can always log into my ADW but that's not as convenient.

As for pulling the exacta info, I put up a slightly different version for comparing ROIs on any 3 picks in different structures. box, keybox, straight etc.

That spreadsheet uses "SuperTote" by brisnet.
You will need an account but it's free.

Here is the link to the PaceAdvantage post.

If you download, don't use the ge.tt site, instead use the attachment at the bottom of that thread.
