I saw Mountain as the warm up for Triumph (don't ask....) in 1985. A few others that weren't too bad

Tom Petty with Bob Dylan
Eric Clapton w/Phil Collins on drums and Robert Cray as warmup
Neil Young with and without Crazy Horse. Best warmup act I saw him with was Tracy Chapman.
Moody Blues
U2 with Los Lobos. U2 wasn't great in the regular show but they did a filler act wearing wigs and playing different instruments and sang several Hank Williams songs. Now that was great.
Hank Williams Jr...speaking of loud
REM several times, but the first with 10,000 Maniacs
New Order with Echo and the Bunnymen
Don Henley

Probably forgetting a few but those were most memorable

Going way back.

Elvis
Ronnie Milsap
Bobby Bare
Roy Orbison
Wild Country (before they changed their name to Alabama.)
ZZ Top
Rod Stewart
Hank Jr. (4 times)
Willie Nelson (3 times)
Sawyer Brown
Kentucky Headhunters
38 Special
Marshall Tucker Band
Oak Ridge Boys
Ronnie McDowell (Elvis Tribute)
George Strait
Mickey Gilley
Gary Moore
Bob Seger
Garth Brooks
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Randy Travis

I'm sure I missed a few as time plays tricks on a memory.

A cousin scored tickets to see the Beatles on their first American tour, I was in a car wreck 2 days before, and missed it. Sadly, never got another chance.

Well past their best by then, OTM. :(
Felix had been shot dead by his wife (curses upon you, Gail Collins); Leslie had moved on to different projects.
I saw Mountain in 1972; a year later the classic Mountain line-up had crashed and burned.

Really enjoying this thread -- many great experiences being related by you all. What would also be interesting would be those special gigs that you would have loved to see, but missed out on. Instance, not having seen Stevie Ray Vaughan live is one of life's biggest missed-opportunities for me. (And Randy Rhoads and of course Jimi for that matter too).

just to mention both in the same sentence. I didn't think anyone who liked one would care for the other. Did someone else buy the tickets?

Nope, i bought tix to both during high school. I play piano/guitar, and Oscar Peterson was playing solo at the Troy Music Hall noted for the best acoustics in the world, and Sabbath because they were Sabbath :) Ian Gillan from Deep Purple was the singer at the time, crappy album ( Born Again ), but a great show. Helix was the opening act, think they might have had 1 popular song.

Saw some great double headers though, Maiden open for Priest, Motley Crue open for Ozzy , Yngwie Malmsteen playing for some band opening for Ted Nugent etc. Smooth jazz, Maysa/Kim Waters/Ken Navarro..best outdoor sound i have ever heard, sounded as clear as a cd. Some throwbacks...Titi Puente and his orchestra, Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra , Barry Manilow. Also have a bunch of friends/ex-bandmates on major tours both currently and in recent years.

One of my favorite country western singers was Conway Twitty and I got to see him live back in the 70's in my hometown.
He had Bill Anderson, Dottie West and Johnie Cash's brother with him.
Anderson and Dottie performed together. Cash came out and bantered and sang all of his brother's hits.
But when Conway Twitty came out, he, stood at the back of the stage, didn't say a word to his audience and sang all of his hits. I thought it mighty strange.

When I got to Vegas, I made a point to see my favorite, Dean Martin. He put on a dynamite show.

Most memorable was a Neil Diamond concert in the rain. He was obviously afraid of getting electrocuted while playing his guitar, but he soldiered on.

A local boy, Ritchie Valens generously performed at the roller skating rink, where nearly everyone had front row seating.

Oh ya, and 10,000 Maniacs. That was one of those 'for the girlfriend' concerts. Turned out pretty well (on both accounts).

Keep 'em coming.

I wonder how much money collectively we've spent on concert tickets.

Back in the day things were cheaper. Nearly all the concerts I went to were less than $20. Hendrix was $10??!!! I remember getting off work at Safeway
wearing my white shirt and slacks and short hair. I was the straightest looking kid at the Hendrix show. Everybody thought i was a narc.

Here's one I forgot. I stood in the presence of Dr. Wernher von Braun the famous German rocket scientist. I stood about 10 feet away from him.

Gather round while I sing you of Wernher von Braun,
A man whose allegiance
Is ruled by expedience.
Call him a Nazi, he won't even frown.
"Ha, Nazi Schmazi," says Wernher von Braun.

Don't say that he's hypocritical,
Say rather that he's apolitical.
"Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
That's not my department," says Wernher von Braun.

Some have harsh words for this man of renown,
But some think our attitude
Should be one of gratitude,
Like the widows and cripples in old London town
Who owe their large pensions to Wernher von Braun.

You too may be a big hero,
Once you've learned to count backwards to zero.
"In German oder English I know how to count down,
Und I'm learning Chinese," says Wernher von Braun.

I saw Widespread Panic on an island in the Miss in Memphis

Yep, Mud Island...got there about 8 hours early and they were rehearsing on stage. My buddy and I somehow worked our way backstage and there was a huge outdoor grill full of chicken and steak, and just as the guy cooking gave us some food some security dude eyed us and ran us out. I think there is video on youtube of the rehearsals, but I can't find it now.

He had a bodyguard with him that had the biggest set of arms I have ever seen on a man...

PA, What about a woman? Any women with big arms

Seen many, but the highlights are here.

Pink Floyd at Ohio State I think around 82?

Bob Seger x2

Rolling Stones somewhere in Michigan while I was a youngster.

U2 was a great show. During Pop Mart Tour. Ohio Stadium

Dwight Yoakam was pretty good x2

Ricky Van Shelton w/ KT Oslin at Beulah Park.

Eddie Money about 10 years ago with the latest versions of Styxx and REO Eddie Money came out first and was the best part of the show. He really was good and so was his band. Styxx was ok. We left in the middle of REO. They sucked.

James Taylor about 10-15 years ago. His backup singers were better than most headline acts. Taylor was incredible and told some great stories about the 70's

And the best concert I ever saw, seriously

Ambrosia opening for Foreigner at St. Johns Arena at Ohio State. Around 78?

Ambrosia opened for Foreigner. They were fantastic. They came out and did two encores and we couldn't figure out the delay. After the 2nd encore Foreigner came out and they were so drunk they could hardly play.

After about 2 songs the drummer passed out and fell into the drums. One of the lead guys was carried off stage and the lights went out. We all started screaming and booing and about 5 minutes later the Ambrosia guys came out and apologized for Foreigner.

Then they picked up the Foreigner instruments and played all the Foreigner songs/hits. They were great. You would have thought Foreigner was playing. It was incredible.

many more in smaller venues

I regret passing up free Stevie Ray Vaughn tickets a year before he died

Cheap Trick, The Tubes, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, The Boss, Dr. Feelgood, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Captain Beefheart, Talking Heads, Buster Poindexter, smoked weed wit Keef in the band dressing room in a NYC hotspot, Van Morrison, George Thoroughgood, Mink DeVille, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Garland Jeffries, The Who, The Band, Dylan, The Spinners, McCoy Tyner, Lester Young, The Clash, Joe 'You gotta look sharp'... I can go on citing whom I've seen live.
Overall it didn't really make me more well-rounded than anybody else here... EXCEPT: I would pay real money to see Ian Dury and the Blockheads again. That was quite edifying, and w/out a doubt the best show I have ever seen anywhere. Brilliant! Sorry you boys and girls missed that! ( Bob Marley and the Wailers was a close second. )

About 15 years ago, I was riding my bike in Central Park. Afterwards, I sat down in the Poet's Walk to relax for awhile. During this time, I noticed a photographer taking pics of three young guys, two of them black with funny haircuts, and one hispanic with very long straight hair. No one except me was paying any notice.

After the shoot was over, I asked the photographer who the guys were. He said they were a rap group called "Black Eyed Peas." I said to him "Oh," and said to myself, "Never heard of them."

A few years later, I saw them on MTV. A female singer had joined the group. They kept getting bigger and bigger. Finally, when I was watching them play halftime at the Super Bowl, I said to myself, "Now, I've heard of them!"

Itzhak Perlman He could hardly walk out on stage, because he developed

greatest violin soloist of our age; concert in Phoenix, AZ.

Jean-Pierre Rampal Great flute soloist; I saw him when I was a student

i remember seeing the Beatles in Sufolk downs sometime around 1965. the tickets were less than $5 and the place was packed. it was the very first show i ever went to.

10 years later i was in the portable dressing room business. i did the dressing rooms for Belmont Race Track concerts, Concerts on the Commons, Great Woods, Saratoga Performing Arts Center when they were remodeling and a few other places that had some big name events.

i was at the shows even though most of the time i never saw the acts on the stage, but i did see them in their dressing rooms.

I saw the original Creedence Clearwater at the old Spectrum in Philly for about $10 a ticket. I went Dover Downs simulcast and they advertised Creedence Clearwater Revival (COPY BAND) tickets starting at $35 and up.

I know it's crazy when you compare concert ticket prices from years ago to now, and that's not adjusted properly for inflation. I saw the Allman Brothers, The Elvin Bishop Band, and Johnny Winter And all on the same show at the Fillmore East and the tickets were $6.50. Johnny Winter and the Allman Brothers recorded live albums at those shows, and Elvin Bishop, who was the opening act, had a hit single at the time.

I've been to a few, though not hundreds of shows, and here's my take:

Best concert, large venue: A/C D/C at Metropolitan Arena, Twin Cities, 1981
Honorable Mentions, large venue: Scorpions, Kansas, Wisconsin Rockfest, 2000

Best concert, small venue: The Kings, Duffy's Bar, Twin Cities, 1981
Honorable mentions, small venue: Night Ranger, Medina, MN - 1998, April Wine, small bar in St. Paul, 2000

Worst Concert: The Rolling Stones, 1982, Sorrento, Italy - the sound was horrible. The J. Geils Band warmed up for them and sounded fine - not sure what the problem was.....

I helped Badfinger carry in their equipment, in lieu of the $10 ticket for the gig. :D

Damn! That's impressive! Where did you see them play?

I'm a big Badfinger fan. Never got to see the whole band together -- only the three that were alive after Pete Ham died. I've seen them several times over the years in different venues and with different bands.

I got to talk with their bassist, Tom Evans, on the phone once. He was the co-writer, along with Pete Ham, of "Without You". He actually returned my phone call to him!

When I was 16 a friend of mine drove to NYC from Ohio on a whim to see if we could meet Joey Molland of Badfinger when he was playing in the band Natural Gas (they toured as the opening act for Yes around 1976).

Natural Gas was on the Private Stock record label and the record label's office was somewhere in midtown Manhattan.

My friend and I found the address on the record jacket and took the elevator up to the floor for the company. As we were getting off the elevator Joey Molland and Mark Clarke (formerly the bassist for Uriah Heap) were getting on the elevator. I grabbed my friend by the arm and pulled him back into the elevator. I introduced myself to Joey and told him we drove from Ohio to see him. He was pleasantly surprised by our efforts to meet him so he asked us if we drank beer. We said yes, of course!

We sat in the lobby of the office tower at little café and had a couple of beers with him and Mark Clarke and shot the breeze for about an hour.

Then when they played in Cleveland at the old Richfield Coliseum a couple months later we went to see them. Two of my friends got backstage. My other friend and I met up with Joey and his wife Kathy outside in the loading area on his way back to the bus.

Several months later, my friend dropped out of high school and ran away with another buddy to L.A. Somehow they found Joey's address. He remembered my friends from Cleveland and Joey and his wife actually let them live with them for a couple of months at their home in the valley until they found jobs and got settled.

The story has more twists and turns, but I'll save the rest of the story for another day.

They were very genuine people as well as being members of a great rock band.

Its been nearly 3 years since I replied to this thread. The only shows I've seen since 2012 were ones already listed: Seger, Eagles & Chicago. The wife is seeing Van Halen in a couple weeks. I've heard Roth doesn't sound too good anymore. Still on my docket? AC/DC and Black Star Riders.

Pretty much every classic rock group their is. Saw Bob Seger play in a ice rink in the 70's. Nugent walk in to many bars and play. Seger 10 times overall. Neil Young even more. And Springsteen 22 times now. 1984 saw Bruce four times in six days three different cities. The last city was part of Amnesty International. I learned to dislike Sting. Too much talk, not enough music.

Okay, I have seen a few but not many.

I wrote the above line before I wrote the list. I forgot how many of these I had seen until I went through my album list.

Billy Joel
Loggins & Messina
Moody Blues (2010)
Celine Dion (amazingly, the best show ever)
Elvis (OK, pretty amazing, especially for $17.95; LV Hilton 1976)
Kenny Rogers (completely upstaged by The Righteous Brothers)
Neil Diamond
Bellamy Brothers
Tony Bennett (upstaged by Joey Heatherton)
Ray Orbison (last tour)
Boz Skaggs
Coasters
Temptations
Drifters (house band at Duffy's Tavern, Las Vegas, 1976)
BB King
Kingston Trio (Bachelor's III)
Little Anthony & Imperials (Bachelor's III)
Gladys Knight
Jerry Lee Lewis (took 7 trips; always canceled last show of week)
Jerry & The Pacemakers
Ann Murray
Lou Rawls
The Commodores
Turtles (London)
Flash Cadillac (pretty amazing)
Coasters
Dionne Warwick
The Doors
Tom Jones (London)
Hair (London)

LOL - Still thinking of them but my 15 minutes are almost up.

Damn! That's impressive! Where did you see them play?

They played at our high school auditorium.
I'm guessing 66-67?
I thing I was a Junior, but it might have been 69.

I was in the right spot at the right time and when they pulled up early, not all their cars were there.

Elton John. He performed for 2 hours earnestly attempting to cover all his hits. He failed. No patter and minimal showmanship. Just the music. It was a moving experience.

And the Monkees. In person, it's apparent Mickey Dolenz is the talent. He carried them.

Black Flag

Social Distortion
Suicidal Tendencies

A lot more I don't remember. I used to live close to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano California went there quite often, small venue sets a couple hundred, they still book bands who are long past their heyday. I was into punk but just the music, no tattoos, piercings or spiked pink hair for me. Probably saw 5x as many punk bands as I listed. Punk bands were about the most unreliable bands there were. If you went to a 4 band "gig" at most 2 would show up and the other two were last minute replacements.
