I double-checked my numbers gleaned from the daily EQUIBASE charts as they seemed out of the ordinary....but they are not. The out-of-state NYRA increase is mainly due to Magna's decision to limit its availability for wagering on NYRA's main Wintertime rivals Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park.
This past Saturday Philadelphia Park, Laurel Park and Aqueduct Race Track all were closed for "live" racing due to extreme weather. I believe simulcasting continued. In addition, FUNNY CIDE competed in his seasonal debut in the 10th race at Gulfstream Park. This combination of events should have been "great news" for an anticipated handle increase for MEC-Gulfstream Park. Instead, their out of state handle on Saturday was DOWN as compared to the same Saturday of 2003.
