Report in DRF saying Mth trying to scrape together a field for $500g race. With the Man O War a week later at Bel it's time for Mth to wave the white flag. Nobody cares about it anyway. I'd cancel it this year not a soul would miss it Take the money and juice some Haskell Day stakes or put it into the overnights- maybe save it for the post Labor Day part of the meet.

A one day Haskell festival makes sense - and forget the rest of the year.

During the Atlantic City days, this was one of the premier races in the country. Maybe they should knock it down to six furlongs? Then, they might get a full field.

You know cutting back to a mile might not be a bad idea. Good prep for the 8/11 Fourstardave at the Spa if that stuck as a fixture.

Make it 5/8ths on the grass and they'll draw enough to split it into two divisions. Linda Rice will come down with five or six and Ness/Midwest will move up some former 5k claims.

I've seen some hilarious races written this year....
4 1/2 f turf races at Mountaineer
4 1/2 f Allowances at Pimlico & Presque Isle (as much as $50k here)
And even some 4f races around the Northeast

Too many races for older turf routers all clustered together around the same time. Also, the Arlington Million probably has taken away a lot of the juice this race once had. If I had a decent horse, I'd run him for $500K. If you finish second or third, you make your expenses for the year.

I was hoping against hope this thread was misplaced and should have been in off-topic.

I agree suitable for both forums.

Political views aside, further evidencing the wisdom of racetrack executives, namely in this case Monmouth Park, the Poker (Bel) and Red Bank Stakes (Mth) are both being run on Jul 4 at one mile on the turf. The only difference in the two races are 1) the Poker is $150k while RB is $100k and 2) the Poker is one turn plus a dog leg while the RB is 2 turns. Brilliant. Mth got what it deserved when 4 of the 8 RB entrants are x-entered in the Poker (10 entries).

I blame two things. One, too many races are graded and graded races being used for "win and in"....
I think the number of graded races should be reduced dramatically.
Too many tracks carding graded stakes for similar money at nearly the same time has diluted the product. The reason why we see grade 1's with 5 pr 6 horse fields is because the following week there is a grade one or two with the same purse with similar conditions and a weaker field.
Get rid of half the graded stakes and we'll see "real" championship races.
Leaving myself open to a big flame thrower from the board...Ask me if I care.... If the Breeders Cup went bye bye tomorrow, I would not shed a tear.
I think it has run it's course.

Not a bad field. Would be much better if there wasn't another G1 same distance next week but not bad.

What track is Northeast? I have not seen a 4.0f turf race carded at track this year (was it for 2yo and if so then it does not count)....

Fact is whatever MNR, PIIM or PID do is immaterial as they are B level tracks at best. A few may argue that PIM is a step above MNR or PID.

I agree that their are too many Graded Stakes. The grading of stakes should be dependent upon the talent the stake attracts.

You may be singin' a different tune this Fall - when Monmouth opens up full blown Sports Betting on both Pro and college games.

Article link below. Not only that, MTH will be the *only* track in the USA to have a Sports Book at least until other N.J. tracks take the plunge... Jersey has an exemption under Federal Law. Jersey is the ONLY state (outside of NV, and Oregon as I recall.) to have this exemption.

Now do you suppose having full Sports Book at the racetrack, might attract just "a few" players ?? Hmmmm... I think their Live handle goes way way up. IF all goes well, expect Meadowlands to follow... should be interesting!

Monmouth Park 1st to offer betting on College & Pro Sports (http://www.paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/monmouth-park-expects-to-be-the-first-to-offer-betting-on-college-and-pro-sports/)

Sorry my OP wasnt clear. I meant MP should wave the white flag as it relates to the UN, not its mere existence. As far as sports betting is concerned, NJ is not grandfathered under the Federal law. Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana are. When the law was passed it gave states a year to get in under the grandfathering. In NJ such a law must pass public referendum. Law never made the ballot because I believe Republicans obstructed the law from getting on ballot out of fear that it would stimulate Democrat turnout and foil Christie Todd Whitman's gubernatorial bid. Measure never made ballot, Whitman won and NJ isn't grandfathered. Plan is to flout the Federal ban. This is why Mth will be the only game in town. AC casinos fear ramifications of offering sports betting in face of Fed ban because of licensing across states, etc. Mth has little to lose in comparison.

I believe the intent of the NJ Sports betting decision is to challenge federal law under Constitutional grounds.
I think the whole thing is stupid.
If one wishes to place a wager on a game, they should be able to do so.
After all it is that person's money.
For crying out loud, the Brits can bet on which of two angry women who on a rainy London evening will get the only taxi cab available.

Speaker Chuck Haytaian led the obstruction. A real assh*le, his career was ended by a sexual harassment scandal that cost the taxpayers $350k a short time later.
