Casie Coleman has been raking in the sires stakes money this year in New York and Ontario. Michaels Power, a three-year-old Camluck gelding, won the $600,000 Upper Canada, the richest restricted race in NA, as well as an elimination for that race and a division of the SBSW (open).

In New York Coleman is battling Linda Toscano for the top spot in the SS rankings, thanks in no small part to the undefeated Bettor’s Delight colt, Coral Snake, and the undefeated Bettor’s Delight filly, Eighthunrdolarbill.

Snake, the product of a half-sister to Oliver Cleo, is four for four lifetime/this year, with three of those wins coming in the NYSS program. Last time out he established a new TR for a three-year-old colt pacer at Vernon when he came first up at the half and won in 50.1. Escape the News was second. Snake was the 2-5 choice in that race with Brennan driving. The Artiscape gelding Breakin The Law, winner of the Lou Grant and the Spring Survivor Series, was the second choice at 9-5, and finished out.

Friday night in the third division of the Armand Palatucci Pace at Yonkers, Coral Snake takes on Heston Blue Chip, last year’s king of his class in the NYSS. Heston is three for three this year, and he and Snake have each won about $90,000. Heston hasTetrick and the three while Snake has the six and will probably have Brennan.

Heston has only strayed from the SS program once, for a trip to Dover for the Matron last November. He lost his elimination to Kingcole but was an easy winner in the final. His connections say he’s being pointed to the Pace eliminations after this race. Coral Snake is not eligible to the Pace.

Coleman’s other NYSS standout, Eighthunrddolarbill, takes on Handsoffmycookie in the third division of the Art Watson Pace at Yonkers Thursday night. This filly has only started three times, with two of her wins coming in the SS. Last time out she beat JK Fine Art at Tioga for Brennan. She was 4-5 from the rail and won by ameasured half-length off a pocket trip.

In another division at Tioga, Cookie, an Art Major filly who earned more than $670,000 last year, left from the outside and got carried past a 26.1 quarter to the 3/8, then provided Major Look with a pocket trip. The latter escaped late to beat her. Cookie also lost her first start of the year at Vernon to JK Fine Art. She has the two and Tetrick while Eighthunrddolarbill has the eight and Brennan.

Just to give some historical perspective to Coral Snake's record 50.1 mile at Vernon; in August, 1966 Frank Ervin wanted to break the 1:55 race mile record Bret shared with Adios Harry, so VD put up a $20,000 purse for a match race between Bret and Waygone Hanover. More than ten thousand fans showed up. The latter was a rabbit and Ervin planned to follow him as far as he could go, then take over. Unfortunately Waygone ran outof gas at the half and almost stopped Bret in his tracks. The final time was 55.3—more than five seconds slower than Coral Snake went on Friday night.
