Mods could move this to Off Topic if it seems off topic.

I have to confess that although I wager on all sorts of tracks, a lot of times I did not even know which state a particular track was located. I was thinking of building a map, then I discovered this one: http://www.tmeter.com/racetrackmap.html

which is quite good. But, that led me to ask the following questions:

1) How come there seem to be no racetracks in Tennessee or Georgia? (or many other states, but I ask this because I have heard/thought these states had a strong history being connected to horses and performance etc)

2) Also: I see that Presque Isle Downs racetrack (Erie PA) is missing from this map. Is that place being shut down?

3) Would it be of any interest to some people to see a historical map showing both past and present race tracks on the same map with different color markers. (eg Hialeah Park (http://www.hialeahparkracing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=12&Itemid=61) FL is not on this map). Although it seems that they have QH racing there now.

Thanks for any useful comments.

Disclaimer: I should add that I am just planning on building the map if there is interest as a hobby and would like to contribute to public domain/or any non profit horse welfare related website. I am not doing this to put it on my "informative blog" (as some commenters think, lol).

Iceknight,

Thanks for that map. Great idea.

I posted it on my HorseHandicapping Authority Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/TheHorseHandicappingAuthority) .

Nice little project though several do seem to be missing. This list from Equibase should help you fill in some of those gaps

Non wagering QH meet at Laurel Brown.

Georgia has a couple of hunt meetings, but that's probably not what you are looking for.

Currently 43 states have legalized pari-mutuel wagering. Horse racing is legal in all 43 states, though not all offer greyhound wagering or bets on Jai Alai. These 43 states include: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

That leaves only 7 states in the US who do not currently offer legal pari-mutuel wagers. These 7 states include: Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Utah.

Just because it is legal in a state, that does not mean there is a race track offering pari-mutuel in that state. Several states such as Alabama used to have a race track , but no longer do. Somebody could open a track in those states if they want to.
The map in the first post does not show a race track in Nebraska. In fact there are 4 tracks here. Last year there were 5, but Atokad which race a 2 day meet in order to have simulcasting decided it was worth the bother. In all likelihood, this will be Lincoln's last year for a while as the owner of the land on which the track stands is going to use the land for other purposes.

is horse racing legal in Utah?Actually as of June 1,2012 , Horse racing is legal in Utah. They even created a state racing commission. What is not legal is any form of gambling on it.

I guess I should have quantified that by saying, it is not legal to wager on horses (or dogs) in Utah.;)

The second map (posted by horseplayersbet.com is way more detailed and shows the takeout also, which is great to know! I did notice that even in this map, Nebraska is showing only one, so this subject is definitely worth researching. Thank you guys!

Racing is, gambling on them is not.
