My landlord hasn't raised the rent in I would say 5 years, since I got here. I had a huge high ceiling apartment for $525 now I have it for $600. In Brooklyn, a good neighborhood, this apart would go for $2500 at least.

In this crook infested city how can an apartment building with 16 units, 4 floors have a monthly water bill of $2500 which is the basis of his rent increase. It's just flowing water .....

That's $152 per unit if my math is correct. Sounds outrageous to me...

I agree that the water bill as an excuse to raise your rent seems to be a bit overstated. From what I have heard rent in your neck of the woods is normally astronomical anyway, is that correct? You state in your post that the apartment could be going for $2500 at the least. I think I would take the rent hike, understand the everything has gone up in the last 5 years, and be grateful that he didn't jack it higher.

IMO.

the only legit reason why that water bill is so high is if there is a leak somewhere in the building, more than likely it would take 5 toilets to be running full time to be that high,

He's lying or he needs to contact Water Dept.

No I live in small town upstate NY, not in Brooklyn. Used to live there before rent hikes.

Oh got it, I misread you original post. Still, 600/mo wouldn't even get you in the ghetto in the town I live in.

He should be honest though. Is that public record, since it's an apartment building? Could you verify?

What was the water bill before? Is he saying it went up? On-site laundry machines (non-coin operated)? Some people have been known to start their own laundry business with access to an open machine or two...

Is there a water meter for each unit, or, is it like I expect, 1 meter for the entire building?

I got a water bill for $2600 once. It was a big mistake, but I had a time getting it straightened out.

Why does the landlord have to justify a rent increase? If you haven't had one in 5 yrs, it sounds reasonable to me.

I'm just taking up space, true.

aren't we all?

I can understand that you at least want an honest reason for the rent hike. even if it's.. "I haven't raised the rent in 5 years" it's the HONEST part you are looking for . I get that.

Who's honest? We shift around truths. The guy has emphysema and has some bad days and still has a strong, cheerful disposition. He must know something I don't. Still love the apt, it's huge. Cats love donig their crazy runs in it.
