Watch out for New York Hero. Classy, classy horse, with speed to burn. If he likes the track, and if he can get out there to a one or two-length lead by the first quarter, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Funny one can only muster a distant second.

Would love to, but Franie won't let me. :D

Seriously, many top horses that are using a race for a prep for a bigger race (Donn) will not all out to win a race like today's.
Having said that, I look for FC to give 100% today:rolleyes:

The Funny one won very easily.

Pgm Comment
4 Funny Cide: with pace, off rail, took over backstretch, drew off, ridden out
1 American Style: with pace early, 4 wide turn, 2nd best
2 Wacky for Love: reserved early, saved ground, gained 3rd
6 Justification: early speed, chased 3 wide turn, faltered
5 New York Hero: brief speed, faded
Footnotes
FUNNY CIDE with the pace from the outset, moved to the lead racing down the backstretch while still well in hand, then was drawing off when roused once right handed at the sixteenth pole and increased his margin to the wire. AMERICAN STYLE with the early pace, raced four wide around the turn, then couldn't stay with the winner in drive while clearly second best. WACKY FOR LOVE reserved early, saved ground and gained the show. JUSTIFICATION showed early speed, chased the winner three wide around the turn and faltered. NEW YORK HERO showed brief speed and faded.

If he didn't win like he did, I think you could have just about written him off once and for all....but, he won exactly like he should have against this field, and my confidence in him has been a bit renewed....

Anybody have an early figure on the race? Very Good, Good or Mediocre?

Looks slow to me. I have it at 91.

JustRalph

I think he could have won much bigger.........as usual he appeared to be fighting Santo's all the way.........

good to see him run well......I agree with PA.........if he hadn't run well today.....he may have joined Cigar at the Horse Park.......

I have the race like this.

1C 2C LF SF
Funny Cide 94 106 103 102

If you want the pace & speed of the the race look at the 2C & SF. He won the race very, very, easy.

The track was slow today. I have a TV of 20 for the sprints.

If the track was slow, than a 1:22 4/5 for 7f is solid, is it not? SJK, when you say 91, what scale can I compare this to? Anybody have a projected Beyer fig?

sjk
01-10-2004, 07:31 PM
That is on a Beyer scale. In practice, when the horses run back I make an adjustment based on the fact that those horses have been running better (something I do with all races).

Speed figure indicates that he separates the sprint variant from the route variant which I generally do not do. I also do not use 3 year old races to make variants and the other sprint races were all 3 year olds so I am making my variant using an almost completely distinct group of races than Speed Figure. It's not surprising we have a different take on things.

There's no way i can see Funny Cide getting a 91 beyer. That's about 11 to 14 points lower. I just can't see it.

sjk
01-10-2004, 07:48 PM
The race-specific adjustment brings him up to 96. If the Beyer is substantially higher than that, I will probably end up betting to beat him in the Donn.

The Hawk

It hasn't been computed yet, but it's going to be well over 91, likely in mid 100's. Americam Style was 2nd, beaten 7 1/2 lengths, and he was coming off Beyers mostly in the low 90's...

Tom
01-10-2004, 09:31 PM
...now he will be bet off the boards in the Donn, and the real winner will pay more that it should!

All this talk about figs is EXACTLY why I don't use them. They get inflated and deflated at will, and these said figs are the opinions of certain handicappers who, if you win by a decent margin, no matter what the time, you get a high rating. If you can win by using them, god bless ya!

I had a feeling he was going to win, now I've got to find out who placed.

The order of finish was 4-1-2, and the 1 was American Style. Hope this helps.

This is why you should not use any figs you do not make,or know how they are made and understand how to use them.I use my own figs and they are so crude that most handicappers would laugh at them.Until I get winners and contenders that their program would never get.So don't knock all figs, the right figs that help give you a pace picture can help alot.Beware of one # figs, and those that "project"a horses ability. Then you may find they can help you after all.

I certainly would not say Funny Cide was fighting Santos all the way.

Santos eased his feel on Funny Cide as they made their way down the backstretch, and in the lane Santos set Funny Cide down a bit to keep his mind on running. No way Funny was fighting all the way .. I'd agree there was a mild battle between horse and rider only through the opening couple of furlongs.
