No update yet on Giant Ryan. They put a splint on left front leg and was vanned off. Doesn't look good though

Something happened, jock tried to ease/pull him up in the stretch, and then he went down. DRF feed says it was left foreleg. No status update yet after vanning off..

Just read this on twitter:Giant Ryan broke down in the True North but was not euthanized. He has a fractured sesamoid and ligament damage. Is comfortable in a splint.

I didn't think he was going to go down. In fact I didn't think he did.

He was hobbling while on the lead and all out ........sad. He went down as a warrior that's for sure. Let's hope they can save him.

I didn't think he was going to go down. In fact I didn't think he did.I didn't think he did either until NBC showed a head-on shot after the winner crossed the wire.. Giant Ryan could clearly be seen struggling on the ground and the jock was getting up..

Sad...he was a good one.
Hope he makes it.
This is not good for the game today.

The Doc on the track said he was comfortable in the splint. The NBC reporter asked point blank if the injury was life threatening, and the answer was "it could be".

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/10/sports/giant-ryan-a-stakes-winner-fractures-his-leg.html

Dr. Larry Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, said the horse sustained severe vascular damage to the limb in addition to the fractured bones. Further examination would be required, but the prognosis for the horse was grim. At 8:01 p.m., it was announced that the horse would be taken to University of Pennsylvania’s equine center to have surgery on his injured ankle in an attempt to save him.

Good thoughts...

Maybe someone should tell the NYS Racing & Wagering Board that Giant Ryan was NOT euthanized on 6/9?

NYS now resorts to blatant lies to attack NYRA?

Stinking liars or stinking idiots?
YOU make the call.

Do all the states list these equine deaths like NY?

I don't believe so. Btw, the NYS R&W Board was made aware of the egregious Giant Ryan error, and has removed it. The proper incident report will supposedly appear on Tuesday.

They updated that page to reflect : Ambulanced, fell off" after the news was on twitter etc (I had also sent a direct email to info@racing.ny.gov). dont know if that helped in anyway.

The whole key is how they come out of anesthesia.

The whole key is how they come out of anesthesia.
Absolutely . They can can thrash violently . This could be an option he might have other than the padded room, albeit the major injuries .

Using a rail-based harness system, horses are moved from surgery into the recovery room and fitted into a rubber raft with legs, which keeps them dry and their heads above water. After being lowered into the pool, horses remain there until they fully wake and appear ready to stand on their own. A horse might stay in the pool for as little as 45 minutes, but recovery time is based on the level of sedation and other factors.

“For horses with certain injuries, by the time they are transported to the hospital and are readied for surgery, they can be absolutely exhausted,” said Dean Richardson, chief of large animal surgery at Widener. “Those horses can sit there in the pool for four or five hours — perfectly happy — until they show signs that they’re ready to get out.

“It helps them stand up better after anesthesia if they’ve had a chance to recover their strength,” he said.

Best of luck to GR! So grateful he's getting the best of care.

what is Laminitis

It's basically when blood flow is restricted to the inner part of the hoof, which leads to the hoof basically seperating from the bone.

I think I'm going to make some kind of donation to laminitis research in the near future. We lose way too many horses this way.
