Pretty new to multi-races wagering. Who can come up with a really inexpensive, but winning Pick 3 or Pick 4 ticket for us here? Too bad Belmont isn't like Woodbine where we now have 20 cent Pick 3 and Pick 4's.

:9: Paynter

:1: Street Life or :3: Union Rags

Boxing those 5 in the tri and super. Hope IHA runs out but if not probably cash both tickets and make a little money. Will though bet healthy tri and super with Dullahan and IHA in top two spots and Paynter UR and Street Life in the bottom spots.

Just don't see much in the race beyond these 5.

One thing to ponder is if it ends up where a horse freaks and IHA is obviously beat with a couple hundred yards to go will the jockey wrap him up and call it a good run or will he keep him running all out to get 2nd or 3rd? Could see a lot of money being made in the tri and super if that happens.

I'm putting a show bet on everyone EXCEPT IHA. If he runs OTM prices could be most generous. This strategy worked in the "Big Brown" Belmont.

Should be an exciting day. Best of luck to all fellow 'cappers!!!

No box.

Dale Romans is a fantastic representative of trainers to the media. I like him a lot. But he got one of these three races last year, and is (presumably) still getting those free dinners at Malone's as a result. That is a good enough set-up for him for a while. Here, he will have to take second.

It seems that in most years, there are at least two to four horses that are entered in the Belmont where the connection have pointed to the race as THE race to win.
The challenge is to figure out which one of those will win or finish in a placement that the handicapper can make money on the race.

There are no Easy Goers or Empire Makers in this race. There's a steep drop off after I'll Have Another. Either he brings his "A" game and wins or he's tired and finishes up the track. With his form right now, I can't envision I'll Have Another finishing second, third or fourth.

Remember, win odds are not the same as exotic odds, a lot more special money in the win pool on IHA, I'm sure his implied exotic odds will be more like 2-1 which is fair value IMO

i just looked at some pace figures for I'LL HAVE ANOTHER. according to those numbers he has run 3 consecutive races where he has had big improvements every race. this leads me to believe that we have not seen the best of this horse yet.

he has not worked at all over the Belmont surface, but his gallops have been very strong. Doug O'NEIL is trying to bring his best effort on saturday instead of in the morning.

i have a couple of filly's training in Belmont now, and my trainer watches them go while they are on the track, he has seen IHA and all he talks about is how amazed he is with that horse the way he goes every day. if there was ever a horse ready to go a mile and a half, he is textbook for that challenge.

hopefully the weather will be nice and there is a big crowd on hand to watch a great horse perform Saturday.

If IHA wins off theses strong gallops, maybe we can finally realize that working the hell out of horse to prepare for the big races is pure crap. Having a happy horse that enjoys his training regimen is the deal.

Exactly. First really nice animal I worked with was a horse named Braska Blue.
870 QH champ in IA. Trying to get him ready to run was miserable as the horse hated training. To circumvent the whole process, we used him as a pony for the Thoroughbred meet and he loved it. When it came time to race he was fit and happy from taking all the babies to the track. It changed my attitude towards what makes a happy horse. He thrived on feeling important to the whole barn. When he retired he still took his job very seriously as he would coach the young ones being in charge of the baby paddock. It was cool. Happy horses win races.

This is bad. Union Rags could easily become the favorite. Union Rags has won at Belmont and it was a G1 (Champagne) to boot. Most notably Point Given and Birdstone have come from that race. I mean, the current favorite has never won on dirt.

6-1 was decent odds, but 5-2 seems very prohibitive.

Lukas said before The Preakness that he was aiming for this race and to use The Preakness to get Nakatani accustomed to Optimizer.
I gave Optimizer a real good look.
The name rang a bell. And sure enough I dove back into my programs from last August and there it was. Optimizer broke his maiden at The Spa..On grass. They then ran him back in a G2 (T) in which he finished a strong second.
In fact, if I see this horse entered in a turf race it is my hope it's not noticed by the sharper bettors. I'm on him....
As far as Saturday, hmmm...Will be playing him in my exotics.
Lukas is as sly as they come. He still can prep them for the big races.

The question is whether this is too much too soon too far for Paynter, or will he get an easy pace trip and roll on home. He's certainly bred for 12f.
Unstoppable U has speed and can keep him company for about 6f, but he should fall away around then.
That's where My Adonis can come into the picture. If the 6f pace was too quick he is in position to move on Paynter first. He's kind of a grinder and may be able to tough out a nice placing.
I will also use Atigun at a price. Should handle the distance and not be too far back at the half way point...if that darned Leparoux gets him going, that is.
I will also use Union Rags and Dullahan in some capacity...

LOL @ the horses whose ML odds went down from 50-1 to 30-1 when I'll Have Another was scratched.

And those three - Five Sixteen, Guyana Star Dweej, and Ravelo's Boy - are among five in here who have never even run a 90 BSF, at any distance or on any surface (Atigun and Unstoppable U are the other two); and worse yet, of the five only Guyana Star Dweej has any Solid or Professional chef-de-race representation in their Dosage Profile (although none has a DI above 4.00 - as Dullahan does).

I could see entering an obviously overmatched horse in the Belmont if there was some sort of hope that the distance could move the horse up enough to maybe give it some sort of chance (see Is Sveikatas back in 1995); but considering the pedigrees of all of the above except GSD, that doesn't seem even remotely possible.

i know that BAFFERT reguarded PAYNTER as his best horse this year. the horse looks like he has plenty of talent and probably has the best pace number out of anyone in the Belmont Stakes. but the horse comes out of a 2 life allowance race in Baltimore. he may run away and hide this afternoon, but if he does he will do it without my money on him today.

the most logical contenders have plenty of knocks on them, but i see no way get to get around them.

my pick is going to be DULLAHAN, with UNION RAGS to follow.

Wickel
06-09-2012, 11:17 AM
Dullahan gets a huge rider change and will be a lot closer to the early pace. He sweeps by the field on the turn and wins going away. I've liked the way Street Life has progress and he's on his home turf. One more thing: the distance can only help. I'm thinking 5-1 exacta. Maybe savers with 5-9 and 5-12.

For me, the scratch doesn't change who I like. I think Dullihan basically owns the race. There are intriguing others who I'll use in my trifecta:

Dullihan - A case can be made that he's peaked already, but he's been very consistent in his career and the I think the "6 week strategy" will have a payoff here.

Street Life - Up and coming horse from Chad Brown. Needs to improve again, but looks good for that on The Sheets.

Union Rags - Now would be good time to find a part of his former self. His best would crush these.

Paynter. Figures to bounce from his two good figures which were major improvements for him with only 3 weeks between starts.

Atigun - This horse looks too good to pass up using at 30-1.

The race is Paynter's to lose. How big can he run, and how free will he be in front??
Those decide the race. If paynter doesn't leave the field like Redeemed in the brooklyn, we could see a grind out race.

Dullahan will have every opportunity, particularly if Paynter falters.
I am not 100% happy with the way Dullahan reaches out with his stride on the right-front. However he's a giant and he just glides... Always going faster than he looks. If he puts it all together he wins no matter what.

Street Life is the el daffer(sp) (brooklyn/belmont), he probably runs his race, which is not good enough, but if things grind-out and fall apart street life isn't really relatively worse than an el daffer.

Unstoppable U is interesting. He has trouble with his footwork, even when his reigns are jerked he just kinds of swerves out and ends up changing very late, but he has a good tight rhythmic stride nonetheless. He probably quits with the distance, but he is better than I thought. He could improve one day.

Union rags doesn't seem to be in form, but who knows. I don't want to put Paynter and Dullahan on a pedestal and say this is guaranteed to be one for the ages. He could be competitive depending on what kind of trip he gets.

I don't recall Lukas ever admitting a mistake, and it's always "part of plan". He's was mumbling something about "horses for courses" today. His ego, IMHO, is why he's 2% in graded stakes. That, and Eugene Klein died.

That being said, I think his pony is live today. Cold super:

That being said, I think his pony is live today. Cold super:

:10: Optimizer
:9: Paynter
:4: Atigun
:3: Union Rags

Will need a wheelbarrow for all that dough....

I could be and probably am dead wrong... But this horse has no right being on dirt... Needs to return to the turf asap... With that said he will probably win....GL.

I tried this Super
Dullahan first
Street Life,Atigun in the second spot to split away from some of the favorites
street Life, Atigun, Paynter , Union Rags in the 3d and 4th slot..... Good Luck to all in a race that doesn't appear to be too tough.

Did anyone see the post parade? The track is deep! The whole hoof disappears beneath the dirt.

But i think UR will run a great race, ,but come second.

Paynter or Dullahan first and second or third will be UR.

but my bets are not logical today so here are the final selections:

SH bets on :8: and :12: .. good price.

EX Dullahan/Paynter over
Dullahan/Paynter/Union Rags..

Once again I made money on all three Triple Crown races. OF Course, by once again I mean for the first time ever. In fact I don't remember winning on any two races in the same year before this. :jump:

Was listening to SAt Radio...Both Dave Johnson and Bill Finley said Dullahan belongs on grass. Are they correct?

:9: Paynter to win at minimum 3-1

:3::5::9: exacta box if lowest :3::5: box pays > $16 and :3::5: over :9: pays > $50

The ticket ended up being :2::3::9: exacta box ($6), :2::5: exacta ($2), :2: win ($5).

Net profit $2.70.

The grass stuff looks like an overused cliche IMO. That's the hot thing to say at this moment.

A couple things "grass" racing may benefit; keeping a big horse with a little bit of an imperfect stride healthy, and finding his niche.

Assuming he's healthy as ever, he also had a really uncomfortable trip today eating a lot of dirt, at one point either the horse had enough of the dirt or the rider belatedly tried letting the horse relax behind the kickback (either way it only further hurt his poor positioning), being urged/whipped to stay involved during the first moves(have to watch the race, but on the chart an also-ran like street life picked up the pieces after that 1st move).

Right now he looks like a horse who needs a niche and class relief after a freshening. Would grass keep a big horse like that with a little bit of stride issues healthy? Sure. Develop some consistency and get sharp. There's no reason why he couldn't take a shot on any surface in a grade2+ if he were to get hot again. Right now he is looking a lot like Brilliant Speed.

It's the hot thing to say for horses who belong on turf. Look at his PP's. He runs better on grass/synth.

Using my pace figs, it appeared that Dullahan had the "best" chance to win.
Others discounted his chances on legitamate handicapping factors that they used.
It really is a neverending story that all handicappers must face and for those who played Dullahan to win must understand that they didn't make a mistake. We will count this as a dissapointment rather than an error.
