Seeing this story reminded me of Shergar. I had forgotten about it and didn't know all the specifics.

Have others read "Hot Money:The Story Of The Money, the Brach Heiress and the Murder of Horses"?

(The headline states, Bach, but its Brach, as in Brach candy fortune.

Its the true story of the murder, electrocution carried out by the "Sandman" on show horses. Killing them for insurance money.

http://articles.latimes.com/1996-09-01/books/bk-39511_1_ken-englade

Everyone is familiar with one--Reille Hunter--who was born Lisa Jo Druck. Her father was implicated in the murder of show horses but never charged.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter

According to ABC News (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC_News), Lisa Druck was "a prize-winning equestrian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equestrianism) when her father was implicated" in the "horse murders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_murders)" scandal, "an ugly plot to electrocute horses for insurance money".[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter#cite_note-ABC-14) The convicted criminal and FBI informant Tommy "The Sandman" Burns stated that James Druck was involved in the 1982 insurance fraud death of Lisa's show jumper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Show_jumper) Henry the Hawk. Gwen and James Druck divorced that same year; Lisa was 17 years old at the time.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter#cite_note-15)[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter#cite_note-ESPN-16) James Druck was never charged, and he died of cancer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer) in New York City in 1990.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter#cite_note-STARBANNER-10)[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter#cite_note-ABC-14)[1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rielle_Hunter#cite_note-PALMBEACHPOST-17)

This horse was shot between the eyes.
While both are shocking in the annals of human cruelty to animals, I would suggest that Alydar's condition was much more painful to endure during his final couple days. To me it's like comparing a heart attack to cancer. I know which one I'd like to die from.

The mystery thickens. the bolt guns used in cattle or horse slaughter, right?
Edit: my comment is not meant to be political in any g'dammed way but I was just asking because there is no horse slaughter that occurs in US yet..or does it?
