View Full Version : Why I Said No To Twin Spires Players Pool

I bought in on Derby Day and they blanked. On Preakness Day I said no. I figured that even if they hit the super and high five and pick six ( a miracle)I would not get my money back. As on Derby Day the super paid around 97,000 dollars and that still would have left them 3,00 short of break even. I did not feel on Preakness day the payouts would = anything like they did on Derby day. Here are the results

The TwinSpires Players` Pool goes after today`s (Sat. 5/19) Preakness Stakes Day Pick 5 + Preakness Stakes Super Hi-5. The total amount of Players` Pool wagers will be $50,065.

UPDATE: 7:45pm ET/4:45pm PT 5/19/12: The Players` Pool had 15 winning $0.50 Pick 5 tickets today. Each winning $0.50 Pick 5 ticket returned $1485.05 (for a Pick 5 gross/net return total of: $22,275.75). The Pool also had 3 $1.00 Super Hi-5 winning tickets. Each $1 Super Hi-5 ticket returned $1,833.80 (for a Super Hi-5 gross/net return of $5,501.40). The final (net) total returned back (and distributed) to the Players` Pool is $27,777.15

Anyone can wait till the game or races are over and say that He or She saved money.

How smart can a person be to do that?

But when making a group ticket you are going to lose every time that alot of favorites wins on the ticket.

Over time a group ticket can win a 2 million payoff on a $50k bet then the armchair quarterbacks will have to admit after the races are over that He or She made a mistake.

Everyone knows that the little bettor has little or no chance over the much bigger bettors. The player pools gives the little bettor a chance for a good payoff.

I am just not sure that the tickets are designed as good as they could be to insure a great payoff.

You are right. I should not have said it was a bad bet after the races were over. I bought on Derby day because I thought they would hit one for 100,000 or more and then after taxes I might only loose 3 dollars. I will say this before the next Players Pool. I feel the Belmont Players Pool will be a bad bet. I don't think there will be any 2 or 3 million payoffs. If I am wrong then so what. I don't have the money to even buy a small pick six ticket so I agree for those that wish to be involved it is fun to look at the tickets and say" Hey I'm live in pick six" And for 10 bucks it's worth it. I just think perhaps they need some better handicappers like Steven Christ or Matt Cruthers Dad is a killer pick six guy. I will buy again in the Breeders cup as on that day it is possible to get a 3 million payoff. Last Year I think I won 110 in the players pool.( It may have been another day) And if they had won the players pool on Preakness day I would have posted why I missed out on 1,000 dollar payoff. So I will pass on Belmont day but will buy in on Breeders Cup. And if they hit for 3 million on Belmont day I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I only hit 30% winners..

There will be no Player's Pool in this year's Breeders Cup. Since it is at Santa Anita. California put in a law banning this type of group wager through the internet, after Winticket.com's Players Pools hit the Pick 6 on various occasions in 2004-2005.

Thanks for that. I did not know they did that. Have to get a underground syndicate going for breeders cup. I can't afford to buy a expensive pick six pick five or even a 100 or 200 dollar pick 4 but I see why they would do that I think they tried that for a while in Hong Kong Pools as well but then gave up and went back to letting the syndicate money back in. It sure can help out the pool if they don't hit like on Derby Day. I am not sure the total but I think the pool I was in bet like 30,000 in super tickets and missed so that is one reason the super paid 96,000

Along with 10 million or so other reasons.

DETECTIVE, you hit the nail on the head by saying they need to get better handicappers, now they use the DRF handicapper of the year winners AKA lottery winners to handicap and structure the tickets sure fire recipe to lose.

I bet we could get a Team Pace Advantage that could hit it. There are some great handicappers on here.

"The player pools gives the little bettor a chance for a good payoff. "
If I get this right (I am new to this concept), you place money in a pool- someone else handicaps and picks and then if you hit one big, you win, right?
Is this like investment clubs where people democratically pick winning stocks etc? or is this like mutual or hedge funds where a few brains pick the stocks and you get positive or negative returns depending on market performance.

Where is the handicapping and actual "playing" involved in this?

To each his own though.

update "Since it is at Santa Anita. California put in a law banning this type of group wager through the internet" NICE.

It's a team of, what, 3-4 "professional" handicappers that create gigantic tickets in attempt to score big. From what I understand only 4 or 5 in recent years (at least after the Twinspires Bris takeover) have resulted in a positive return (but don't quote me on that...). A good way to piss away money blindly.

Those 'Play with Derek Simon' pools were also somewhat ridiculous. I think one time he was shoving $1,000~ win bets down at Beulah Park. TS quickly got rid of those after negative after negative return.

What gets me is there were only 3 horses that figured in n the Preakness, they ran 1-2-3 all around the track, yet on 8 of the 25 pick 5 tickets 3/4 0f the field were played in that race.

Agreed, seems like they are trying to catch lightning in a bottle with some of their plays, making bets they wouldn't make with their own money, but will when given the liberty of playing someone else's.

Let's see, these people invested....no..."spent" is probably a much better word, a total of $36,300 on the Belmont Pick 6. Of that amount, they allocated just $4,500, just over 12% of their total investent, on covering the Belmont winner, Union Rags, on just ONE of their 5 tickets...the smallest one.

They "spent" the other 88% of their funds, $31,800 of the $36,300, with only Dullahan and Paynter covered in the Belmont.

Will someone please cue up that clip where Trevor emotes "THIS IS UN BEE LEEEVABLE!!!

I only wish that I lived in a state where I could legally have a Twin Spires Account so I could lead the charge to have the current "curators" of the "Players Pool" ousted.

Hard to believe they didn't even have 5 out of 6 on any of their tickets, especially considering the payoffs of the winners in the sequence and only one paying over $10.

Surely their other plays did better.

The twinspires pool spent tons of money on Union Rags in the Ky Derby twinspires pool and lost. And had he lost the Belmont there would have been tons of people saying that it was un bee lieee ablee that this group would have spent tons of money on him again only to see him lose.

Its kind of unfair to make comments after the races since before the races are run there are all kinds of things that can go wrong.

They could have singled Union Rags on each of the five tickets and still not had 6 out of 6, would have had 5 out of 6 multiple times though.

What I don't understand is how they could not make a call in the Woody Stephens, they are supposed to be some of the best handicappers in the game but still wheeled the race on EVERY ticket. I know hindsight is 20/20 but geez make a stand.

You just hit the nail on the head....there are all kinds of things that can go wrong....and in the Derby everything did go wrong for Union Rags.

Now, armed with a 59 workout and Johnny V in the boot for both that workout and the Belmont, to not allocate the same amount of P6 coverage to Union Rags as the other two Belmont horses was downright ridiculous. This is especially true given Union Rags owning a G1 win over the track (Champagne) and with Paynter owning a total of 4 lifetime starts and only a 4th place finish in a G1 (SA Derby) and entering the Belmont off a win in a $50,000 allowance race.

The notion that the group lost a lot of money on Union Rags in the Derby Pick 6 pool does not excuse them for relegating him to second tier status in light of everything that transpired between the moment the gate opened on Derby Day until 6:40pm last Saturday. They simply didn't "get it" with Union Rags....period.

I did not play the Pick 6 last Saturday, but based on my A's and B's for the Belmont Pick 6 races, here's a simple 5 ticket play for $8,100 that would have nailed it, shooting for a scenario where a minimum of 5 "A" horses win, with the other winner being an A or a B:

5,6,9 / 4,5,6,7 / 1,4,5 / 1,3,6 / 5,6,7 / 1,3,5,9 $2,592

5,6,9 / 4,5,6,7 / 1,4,5 / 1,3,6 / 2,3,4 / 3,5,9 $1,944

5,6,9 / 4,5,6,7 / 1,4,5 / 7,9 / 5,6,7 / 3,5,9 $1,296

5,6,9 / 2,8 / 1,4,5 / 1,3,6 / 5,6,7 / 3,5,9 $972

3,4 / 4,5,6,7 / 1,4,5 / 1,3,6 / 5,6,7 / 3,5,9 $1,296 Total: $8,100

The $1,944 ticket was the winner. Had the 10-1 Papaw Bodie (5) managed to nose the 6-1 Desert Blanc (4) in leg 5, the $2,592 ticket wins, with our "A" horses winning all 6 legs, resulting in more consolation payoffs and obviously a larger Pick 6 payout.

Our "B" horses are the ones that only appear only once in the entire group of tickets. Every other horse is an "A".

Quite frankly, IMHO, spending $8,100 in a Pick 6 without a carryover, even on Belmont Stakes day....isn't a great idea. The $15K payoff proved that. Had there been a two day carryover going in....by all means.....fire away!

For obvious reasons, I've always defended the Players' Pools picks throughout the years. I do admit that Saturdays tickets puzzled me. As others may bash BRIS Prime Power, the handicappers will use BRIS data for 95% of the input. They must have abandoned that approach this time:

Race 6: #6 Teeth Of The Dog...... 1st in Prime Power
Race 7: #7 Caixa Electronica....... 1st in Prime Power
Race 8: #1 Tapitsfly.................. 2nd in Prime Power
Race 9: #6 Trinniberg............... 1st in Prime Power
Race 10: #4 Desert Blanc..... 3rd in Prime Power (in a photo w/#5 2nd PP)
Race 11: #3 Union Rags.... 2nd in Prime Power after scr of IHA, #9 3rd PP

I did not play the Pick 6, had 3 of 4 in the Pick 4. Did ok in race 7 with an exacta. I hit the Pic 3 in races 9 thru 11, the daily Double in races 10 to 11, the supers in races 10 and 11. I did not post my picks, but will share my ADW receipts since this is obvious Redboarding. Its a lot easier to pick 'em after the races are over.

It has been 8 Years now. I am still hammering the craft. Oh Hammering (working on)last time I used that word I was wildly misunderstood.
I am Not a Veteran by any means. I still classify me as a Newbie.

I guess what I am saying is I rather use my picks instead of a pool where my money is directed by another. To me that sounds like purchasing a lottery ticket.
When I lose I rather be responsible. Also as a Newbie when I give a pool authority of my money, I at that time am not learning by doing. The learning is to Do.
Now I have a Mate that aides me, Butt he makes me makes me do the work and work then Make my Go. This would help me to grow in the Craft and cease relying on looking to so called Gurus.

Hope I am on point. If Not sorry Mates.

I have a slightly different view on this. Yes, it's a bad bet, and yes I would never get involved with it. However, if it gets a bunch of newbies involved for $10 each and they hit $40 here and there, maybe it gets them interested and involved in betting. I don't really see the harm in it---it's no worse than Powerball or a million other hopeless bets.

Agree that it is a way to get more people involved without them having to rely on their own handicapping. Just wish Twinspires was more transparent with their info. As it is now the only way you can view their tickets is if you are in the pool. What is the harm of posting your plays after the fact for all to see? I'd like to see how they structured their winning Pick 6 ticket on Friday or how they did on their non Pick 6 wagers on Saturday.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't view the picks without having paid to play. So, while I heard they hit it, I never saw the tickets or the ROI. I would certainly be interested in seeing their tickets if you have access to them.

Sorry, since I'm no longer affiliated with TS, I'm not able to access them. In the Winticket.com days, we posted all the tickets as soon as the 1st leg ran. Usually someone from PA will post the TS tickets, meaning they were in for at least $10. My point was that someone on here will always post the losing picks, but not the winning ones. It must be human nature, like rubbernecking to see a car wreck, to relish someone else's losing, but not acknowledge the positive side of winning.

I like the Players' Pool. On days like Derby Day I will make a few small bets on my own but also being in the Players' Pool gives me rooting interest in some of the other races. Sometimes if they have the first 3 in a Pick 4 or the first 5 in a Pick 5, I will bet some of the non-selected horses in the final race. I haven't got rich doing this but over the last year or so I have had a lot of action and am probably marginally ahead.
