The New York Racing Association’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved its 2004 stakes schedule -- one that will honor one of the giants of the industry during Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet, as well as several local communities and equine stars to provide “a stakes-a-day” at Saratoga Race Course.

The newly announced stakes schedule - NYRA previously released its 2004 Aqueduct/Winter Spring stakes schedule - includes the Belmont Spring/Summer Meet; Saratoga; the Belmont Fall Championship Meet and the Aqueduct Fall Meet. Those four meets will offer 153 stakes races, of which 106 are graded and 37 of those rated as Grade 1 events. The value of these races is $32.970 million; counting the $4.25 million offered at Aqueduct’s Winter/Spring Meet, NYRA’s 2004 stakes schedule is worth $37.275 million, up $520,000 from 2003.

At Saratoga, fans will notice the addition of eight stakes, each with a $65,000 purse, that will run on weekdays during the Spa meet, thus giving Saratoga fans at least one stakes race every day during its 36-day meet. At the same time, two other stakes were eliminated from the schedule. On every Saturday at Saratoga, with the exception of September 4th, fans will be treated to at least two graded stakes races

Three Saratoga races - the Grade 2, Honorable Miss for fillies and mares at six furlongs on Friday, August 6th; the Spinaway for two-year-old fillies at seven furlongs on Friday, August 20th; and the Grade 1, King’s Bishop for three-year-olds at seven furlongs on Travers Day, Saturday, August 28th - each had their purses raised by $50,000. The Spinaway was downgraded from Grade 1 to Grade 2 status, but the Honorable Miss was upgraded to Grade 2.

Eliminated from the Spa schedule are a pair of Grade 2, mid-meet races for juveniles: the Saratoga Special for two-year-olds and the Adirondack for two-year-old fillies, both of which were run at six and a half furlongs.

“We eliminated the Saratoga Special and the Adirondack in an effort to strengthen the overall two-year-old program,” said NYRA Racing Secretary/Handicapper Mike Lakow. “Having a stakes race every two weeks up there, we felt, was weakening the fields for the Hopeful and the Spinaway. We believe the Hopeful and Spinaway will now have stronger fields, and by moving them up earlier in the meet, the timing is better for the horses and the horsemen to run them back at Belmont in the Futurity and the Matron. And the purses on both the Futurity and the Matron have been increased by $100,000.to $300,000.”

SARATOGA (36 days)
Wednesday, July 28 through Monday, September 6
43 stakes (30 graded; 13 Grade 1s; $9.895 million)

* Dark all Tuesdays
* Post time 1 p.m., except Travers Day, Saturday, August 28th (12:30 p.m.)

The 135th running of the “Mid-Summer Derby,” the Grade 1, $1 million Travers for three-year-olds at a mile and a quarter, will be on Saturday, August 28th. The Travers heads a card that also includes the Grade 1, $250,000 King’s Bishop for three-year-olds at seven furlongs; the Grade 2, $200,000 Fourstardave Handicap for three-year-olds and up at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf; and the new Victory Ride.

The Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney Handicap for three-year-olds and up at nine furlongs will be run on Saturday, August 7th; while the Grade 1, $750,000 Alabama for three-year-old fillies at a mile and a quarter will be run on Saturday, August 21st.

The new additions to the Spa schedule are the De La Rose for fillies and mares, three and up, at a mile on the turf on Wednesday, August 11th; the John’s Call, for three-year-olds and up at 11 furlongs on the turf on Monday, August 16th; the John Morrissey for New York-breds, three and up, at six and a half furlongs on Thursday, August 19th; the six-furlong Union Avenue for New York-bred fillies and mares, three and up, on Thursday, August 26th; the Victory Ride, also at six furlongs, for three-year-old fillies on Travers Day, Saturday, August 28th; the Saratoga Dew for New York-bred fillies and mares at nine furlongs on Wednesday, September 1st; and the Troy for three-year-old and up at a mile on the turf on Friday, September 3rd. Also in this mix is the Waya for fillies and mares at a mile and a half on the turf on Friday, August 13th. Both the Troy and Waya were run previously at Saratoga.

“There was a void for New York-breds up at Saratoga, but now we have some races in place for them,” Lakow said. “We felt that our overnight stakes program, which we started about a year ago, has gotten stronger and we can give the Saratoga fans at least one stakes a day. This also provides a way for horsemen to get their horses stakes placed and move forward to the bigger races at Belmont in the fall.”

Saratoga also picked up two races formerly held at Belmont Park. The $200,000 Cab Calloway Division of the New York Stallion Stakes for three-year-olds and the $200,000 Statue of Liberty Division for three-year-old fillies will be run, respectively, on Wednesday, August 4th and Thursday, August 5th. They will be run at the new distance of nine furlongs.
