Time to try and bring a little life to the pools...Pay-offs were good yesterday.

Race 1 not worth betting...Not worth trying to beat this favorite.
DD 5/5

I say not worth betting and the (seemingly) obvious 5-4 exacta pays $13.00 and the 5-4-3 tri pays $64...D'OH! :bang:

Now we know why the payoffs yesterday were so good.

Race 2
Deja vu with this race, as the :5: and :4: look the best. The :6: at these odds is certainly playable as well.

Goes 4-1-3...Our 5 wanted to go but was forced 3 wide and fizzled down the stretch.

Went :2: /:3: :5: on Race 3 before I went to eat...Results 1-5-8 and paid BIG.

Glad I got shut-out before the gate was even in motion as the 8 fails to show up...Our 2 ran a nice race (hard to go against a horse who ran that good a race in the slop last out) and placed.

Tote board lights up again with the 5-2-4 coming in.

Blah...6 got used too much early on and had nothing left down the stretch. 4 showed up and thundered away late. 2 got an ideal trip sitting behind two battling leaders (5 and the 6) and wound up 2nd

Ended 4-2-6.

Favorite survives a first-over grind and comes winds up 2nd, just miss a nice score with the 4 finishing 3rd at 19-1...

Heckle away...I play Bangor for two reasons:

1. Nearest track to me, and one of only two PM tracks in the state...Support the local product.

2. Payoffs can be good if you catch the right race. Finding weak favorites and beating them usually takes a good chunk of that pool out (Race 2 yesterday), while the Pick 3 can be a good play as well. Yesterday three post-time favorites came in and the pick three had an ALL and still paid $51.20. That is money prime for the taking and is usually fairly easy to figure out.

I don't bet exorbiant amounts of money at Bangor either, so pool size has little matter to me. When dealing with horses who struggle to stay on gait while running a sub-2:00 mile, I have little confidence in betting anything over $5 in a race.

Looks to me that even @ $5 a race you might still be betting against your own money, looking @ the pool totals $1 or maybe $2 a race seems more logical, how is this track able to operate ?

Same way a lot of them do right now: Slot money (now casino money as well in Maine). Pull up the video sometime and "Bangor Raceway" isn't even listed as the track name. Instead, it just says "Hollywood Casino." The large building that they show on occasion across the road during the feed is the casino, and the building in construction is the new events center.

It's a sad state of affairs here, but not a lot of complaining going on as purses are higher than they ever were (even with the cuts that occurred this year.) Better horses, better times (two new state records two years ago) and better purse money from the casino are keeping things happy here. Problem is, no new money is coming in from betting. Once Hollywood Casino breaks away who knows what is going to happen. They are taking in more money than ever with the addition of table games but still managed to get purses cut for this year by citing reduced profits. Not long now and they will find a way to not be stuck to the money-sucker that Bangor Raceway must be.
