Amarillo Slim had the most amusing quotes you could ever find...

"The population in Amarillo hasn't changed in 50 years; everytime a woman gets pregnant, some man leaves town."

"If you can't spot the sucker in your first half-hour at the table...then YOU are the sucker".

"I never look for a sucker; I look for a champion...and make a sucker out of him."

I met Amarillo Slim in a Las vegas casino years ago...during the break of a tournament that he was playing in...

"How is the tournament going, Slim"...I asked him.

"Tough field"...he replied to me..."the only place where I can hold my own, is in the bathroom".

He met with a lot of adversity late in his life...and moved away from the lifestyle that he loved so much.

So long Slim...and rest in peace.

Didn't know about the molestation plea bargain. Some people thought he was the greatest proposition gambler/hustler of all time. If you haven't read the book Fast Company you are in for a treat. This is a book of mini biographies of some of the greatest gamblers of all time. My pick for greatest gambler/hustler?
"Titanic" Thompson.

Sorry, ain't buying it. Anyone accused of child molestation would fight tooth and nail to clear their name. He was found guilty. He doesn't deserve accolades. He can rot in hell.

This book, I've not read. Are all of these bios poker players? If so, I wouldn't be as interested. Any horseplayers featured in the book?

No horseplayers...but I guarantee that you will love it.

I say this because I know how much you love great writing. And this book's author -- Jon Bradshaw -- was a master of the written word.

Send me an address, and I will mail you the book ASAP.

Just a token of my esteem... :)

Thask, after I asked, I went to Amazon and read about the book. Its does indicate how well its written, but I don't really care about reading up on these particular guys. I was hoping a horseplayer or two was featured.

Thank you for your kind offer though. Its appreciated. ;)

Grits a similar themed book from DRF press is Six Secrets of Successful bettors.
Lots of horseplayers in that one and very good. More than likely you have read
it, but it is kind of hard to find.

Bunky Preston probably knows the origin of "Slim's" nickname but when I first met him in the late 40's his nickname was "Tex" and he was a very good pool player as well as snooker.
The first time I saw him play he was matched with a guy by the name of Marvin Plunk for $500 in a 3 game (snooker)freeze out in SW Kansas. In the late 40's that was a pretty big game, remember college graduates were starting out for 3000-4000 dollars in those years. The next time I ran into him I was running a pool hall in the evenings for Casey Southern in a small town in western Oklahoma. He wanted a game and I listened to his spiel for a while and then I called him Tex and he knew his hustle was down. I never saw him again after I left Las Vegas a few years ago but I read about the child incident and wondered maybe if he was suffering from Alzheimer's or something similar. It seemed way out of character to me after having known him for 60 years or so.
So I say "Goodbye Tex" I was glad I knew you.
