what types of bets do you guys like the best?

I would have done a bunch of 10-cent supers, but they don't allow that for the Derby. However, there are 50-cent trifectas.

I am doing a win bet on my primary contender.
Then an exacta with my key horse on top of 3 other contenders, then flip that for half.
Then I will add a 50-cent trifecta with the 3 contenders on top in a 3x5x8 format.

That's the plan so far.....

But last year right after the race, I should have just picked the two horses I liked and dutch them in a Win bet. I still might go this way.

I usually spread around and take multiple horses because there is a lot of value.

Win Bet
Exactors with that winner and one other Over 4 (A,B/ A,B,C,D)
Tris with that winner ( A/B,C/B,C,D,E,F)

Lots of value in the Derby so I try to play for a relatively big score. I usually play a $1 tri part wheel with three or four horses on top. I have hit it a couple of times including last year, and was close in '99 but only had Charismatic in the 2nd and 3rd slots. Two out three in '03 and '04 as well but not so good in the other years since I started playing.

I sometimes will also play the EXs as well.

once in awhile i usually make a big bet to show. i remember betting on AFLEET ALEX and EMPIRE MAKER for third. its one of the few races where you can bet big money in the 3rd spot and not budge the odds to much.

i haven 't bet any show's in awhile, and this year looks pretty tough so far, but i am going to wait to see how the horses have trained to make my final decision.

More than likely a pass race for me... I've learned not betting the Derby saves me alot of money... to make bets on other races where I have a better chance of cashing an actual ticket.

It's a bankroll drainer...for me anyway....

In the past, I have tended to make some big bets on this race with very little insight. Now I take all the hype in...and listen... but I don't bet the race.

Try to place your horses on an actual odds line. You will see many of the horses you thought were overlays, actually aren't. The twenty horse field floats the odds to where a 10-1 that looks like an overlay...actually just has a chance of 10-1 because of the additional horses...

Oaks-Derby double and doubles on the card offer a lot of value.

I usually make a win/place bet on a horse or dutch 2 win bets.Play exactas with a key horse and 2-4 contenders about evenly, then $1 wheel the field up and down. It's a race worth doing it for.

I won't bet the race if I don't get a minimum of 5-1.But will still play the doubles.Might get into the .50 tri this year.

I usually bet a couple of hundred on the Derby - I look at it as an opportunity to make a huge score if I'm right (and lucky). I bet about half on Supers and the rest on a win bet and exactas.

I bet an 8 horse exacta box with at least 4 reasonable longshots.

It'll be my first time betting the Derby this Saturday? Any more betting strategies you can recommend to a newbie like myself?

The verticals are just insane if you can just find a couple of the real longshots.

I play it just like every other race I play. Just go 1 deeper in the exactas, 2 deeper in the tris and 3 deeper in the supers. The rewards are always better because of the pools but I don't go crazy.

what does it mean to wheel the field up and down?

In the win and place slots for a key horse.

what does it mean to wheel the field up and down?

In a 10-horse field, his up-and-down exacta wheel would look like this:

1 over 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

and

2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 over 1

I play it just like any other race. I single a winner on my superfecta ticket (depending of course on how many final win contenders I have, and I still try to end up with 1 horse on top), the other 3 rows are determined by field size individual running styles and how the race projects to run, and pool size.

I'll use a random number generator to generate 50 sets of 4 numbers between 1 and 20, will use those and bet $.10 supers.

oaks/derby double. if i'm not live in the double derby day. win and place on my best horse. i always bet exactas because they are great value for the difficulty of hitting them. i also play pick 3's and 4's on the big days.

There won't be any 10-cent Supers for the Derby.

This maybe an extremely bad strategy, but I'm still a rookie and it will be my first time betting the Derby. Anyway, in that particular race I'm prepared only to spend $40. I'm placing all win bets with minimum $2.00 bets on all 20 contenders or so how many there are. I'm hoping it will be another longshot as Animal Kingdom was 20-1 last year.

Don't really plan on winning a big score for my first Derby. I just want to cash a winning ticket higher than my original $40 spent on that race. ;)

There's no claim of fame here. There will be another horse race in 20 minutes.:bang:

I generally focus on exacta and sometimes tri. Will probably key 2-3 horses over several others, and then Identify a couple of longshots for individual wagers.

I've had a lot of success handicapping, but I have not capitalized the way I would like to.

This year I do not have a longshot winner. I will look at the race as a normal race and consider multi race exotics.

Figaro, betting every horse is great for the BC. It's actually been profitable every year!! Not so sure for the Derby.

This year I'm betting $10.00 to win on Gemologist & Hansen. Also a $1.00 per box with these two. Total investment $22.00.

Best of luck to all!

play a 1$ exacta a/all and a 1$ exacta box of five horses= $40. and will pay more.

Nothing to technical here but every year I try to think of phrases with the horses names for the derby. Tonight I came up with these below. I don't mean to eliminate horses but to what I feel watching there recaps, names and through out the season. I will probably bet about $100 and about $25 will be name phrases for trifectas/superfectas and such.

So each horse represents the place below.

Bodimeister your have a creative cause But Daddy Nose Best, Dulahan the Union Rags and I'll have another. I'm Done Talking.

Or
Union Rags, I am Done talking! You have a Creative cause but I'll have another you Bodemeister!

Or

Hansen, I'll have another, it was a creative cause and Daddy Nose Best and Union Rags went the day well.

My star got hitched to Gemologist and Liaison in February. In Futures Pool #1, I bet them to win, boxed them w/each other and put them under a few in exactas. Gemologist was a useful selection; Liaison…not so much. But it’s done; he’s a fat price, and he should be passing horses at the end—just skeptical he’ll be close enough for it to matter.

I’m going to roll with what I’ve got. The only addition will be a moon-shot trifecta ticket that puts those two in the show hole only. For the win & place positions, I’ll toss the ten horses with BC experience, and box the remaining: 8x8x2.

GL2A!

I usually do a W/P wager with 40% of the bet to Win and 60% to Place, but for the 138th running I'm tempted to place it ALL on the Bodemeisters nose.

Then I do a superfecta --AB
