Pronounced "mattes"

This once promising 1st round draft pick (4th overall) has now lost 12 straight games. He was 5-2 in his rookie year (2009) and 10-12 the next season on a horrible O's team. He is making 1.3 Million per.

Last year he allowed 81 hits in 49 innings and so far this year 22 in 14.
25 year old has never pitched a complete game.

How is he keeping his place in the rotation. Needless to say, anyone can lose 12 in a row.

He'll probably win tonight.

He seemed to me at the time that he would really become good. Maybe he just ends up as one of those with great potential that never puts it all together. Reminds me a little of that having to have talent to lose 20 in a season quote.

He had surgery did he not? He probably lost some speed on his fastball, and he lost a lot of his confidence.

6 solid innings. 2 out error in the 6th led to two unearned runs.

Side note: 1st baseman Nick Johnson , who made the error, is now 0 for his last 45 at bats. RUFKM ?

So, if he gets a hit in his 50th at bat he will be hitting .020

Great place to watch a ballgame. The prototype for many of today's "designer" parks. A 10 minute walk from the Inner Harbor.

I noticed this morning that attendance is lagging almost everywhere. A few parks are barely breaking 10,000.

I don't think they've all been this year.

Orioles' Matusz ends winless streak

CBSSports.com wire reports
May 1, 2012

NEW YORK -- Buck Showalter got his 1,000th victory as a major league manager, Brian Matusz ended his 11-month losing streak and the Baltimore Orioles (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/BAL/baltimore-orioles) beat the New York Yankees (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/page/NYY/new-york-yankees) 7-1 Tuesday night.
Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy homered off struggling Phil Hughes, giving the Orioles their first win in five tries against the Yankees this year.

Showalter, whose first win came 20 years ago across the street at old Yankee Stadium when New York's Scott Sanderson beat Boston ace Roger Clemens, improved to 1,000-958 in 14 seasons with the Yankees, Arizona, Texas and Baltimore. He joined Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, Davey Johnson, Jim Leyland, Mike Scioscia and Bobby Valentine among active managers in the 1,000-win club.

Matusz (1-3) allowed six hits in 6 1-3 innings to win for the first time since beating Oakland last June 6. He had been 0-12 with a 10.47 ERA in 14 starts since, the longest active losing streak in the majors and one short of the Orioles record set by Mike Boddicker from 1987-88.

2 quality starts in a row. If he pitches well along with Casey Kellem and the Chinese kid (forget his name) look out.

This team isn't that bad. They have some real players. I think the biggest problem they have is the division they are in. I think they would have already looked like they turned the corner if they were in the central. Hope management stays the course they are on because these guys are competitive. Buck has been proven good at getting a team back to that point.

Solid outfield - Markakis, Jones and Reimold- offensively and defensively, Andino (.342 BA) Davis and Hardy are are also solid and Weiters is arguably the best catcher in the AL. Weak links are Reynolds and Johnson.

Wilson Betemit is a quality fill in. The team is 3rd of 14 in doubles and HR's.

Pitching as with any team remains the key.

Pleasantly surprised so far.

I watch a lot of baseball as it's my favorite sport. I also like the O's young talent. Couple of nice flame throwers out of the bullpen also. There problem in making a playoff run is the division there in. The AL East is loaded and the O's have to play them more than any other team. Life just ain't fair sometimes.

How about those Os sweeping the Sox!

Chris Davis goes 0 for 8 and picks up the win!

Watched the last 9 at a local and the place was on edge. Haven't seen this enthusiasm for years. The Adam Jones 3 run shot in the 17th brought the house down and the relief job by a guy who hasn't pitched since high school was over the top.

1st Place in May- unbelievable

Not to mention Chris Davis and Matusz are now tied with 1 win apiece!

I do like Moreland, but I was sad to see Chris Davis go. Given the chance to play everyday he's one of the very best defensive 1B I've seen.

Wwhat they did to him here last season was not sharp....played him at 3b sometimes, 1b sometimes, pulled him while in a slump(s). The guy can pick, has range, and will develop into a power hitter of some degree. Hated to see him go, esp since he's a Texas kid
