I present this poll because for the first time ever, I seem to have little to no interest in this years KD. Maybe I'm just burned out, or is it the fact that past Derby winners have failed in their TC quest. Maybe because the good ones (if not geldings) are retired so early in their careers.

I voted that my interest is very high.

The Derby is always a highlight for me. The anticipation of the Preakness to see if we will have a possible triple crown winner is also big.

To me this year seems even more exciting because there is not one clear-cut favorite.

Maybe you're just a little burned out right now, but I bet as next Saturday gets closer you get a bit of the excitement back. :)

I voted high because, at this point, Bode looks like he could be one of the ones. Not ready to say he is, but maybe.

Very high, could be one of the better derby's despite the lack of exceptional Beyers. Probably the best gauge will be the total bet on this years edition. I'm guessing this year has a chance to break 120 million.

For all the hatred of the Bush administration, using KY Derby betting handle as a measuring stick for discretionary incomes, handle really took off between 2000-2007.

Before attempting to fit a linear model to observed data, a modeler should first determine whether or not there is a relationship between the variables of interest.

I would say there is a definite linear relationship between discretionary income and overall wagering on the biggest race in North America.

I would say there is a definite linear relationship between discretionary income and overall wagering on the biggest race in North America.

Of course, but that's different than inferring a correlation coefficient between administrations and KD wagering, burgeoning on-line wagering is probably the factor most responsible for the increased handle. The only blip in the last sixty years is the mini-crash of 08.

Don't overlook the undercard. Some of those races are just as good as the main show, and, it can be tempting to explore the horizontal wagers using the KY derby.

You're probably right. I've never done very well with the big races anyway. I prefer playing Claiming, Allowance, and sometimes Maiden races.

I voted high because of my past experience with Derby week. First of all, the people in Louisville (Loo a ville) I believe, say they don't go near the track on derby day. So many people you get caught outside and have to watch it on a monitor. The yo yos in their expensive suites with mikes decorated with network logo, say why the favorite will win or why they think they know how to handicap a race. They should be played after the race and not before and just for laughs. The locals told me that mint juleps taste terrible. My old Kentucky home brings forth tears for me for some reason. I took the tour but not impressed. I liked the Stephen Foster out doors play though at night.

I voted high. Last year my interest was low. This year there are many Breeders Cup Juv horses looking good, so I'm able to keep track of the field better.

Last years Derby seem like a race of complete unknowns.

This year.... much different. Creative Cause duking it out with a tough West Coast crowd....Hansen and his "blue tail" races....

Bodes big Beyers... Calvin's upset win on Take Charge Indy..

And Union Rags who I think is one of the more interesting horses to come along in quite awhile... ( where's the Beyers?)

And will the poly closer ( Dullahan) move up on dirt a la Animal Kingdom?

With Bode, Hansen,Gemoligist, Trinniberg, and Take Charge Indy...will there be a speed melt down?

Just seems like one of the most interesting Derby's in years to me....

My interest is no different than year's past, but I think this year's field is much stronger. Makes for a more interesting race, but a less likely chance of a TC winner imo.

Voted very high, very tough contentious race, most likely won't hit my Tri's , Super's , BUT if I do :jump:

As usual, not much. It is a terrible race for me to bet. I haven't a winner in that race since the 80's. The under card is sometimes attractive, I will wait see about that. The bad part is how they drag out races. An hour between races drives me nuts. This year I bet whoever Pace picks. He the only person I know who can pick that race.

I am very excited for the Derby, that's mainly because I had stopped wagering after BC and now I am slowly ramping it up!

i voted same interest as every year........i'm a racing nut so the only way i would vote for "more interested " is if i was going down there....then its whole different louisville story....lol. but this post i quoted is a great post. anyone that bets seriously and is an every day horse player has the best chance of winning on the under card. in reality, lets just face it....the derby is a crap shoot most years. if you hit it....it might not happen again for years. the derby is about horse racing, drinking, eating and fun......winning is just GRAVY if you hit.....the undercard will present opportunities.....it ALWAYS does.

That's a fantastic number for this year's Derby, if that's the final tally for the race - or was it for the day?

On this same weekend though, a supposed box office movie thriller, The Avengers (which I wouldn't pay a nickel to see) took in: $200.3 million bucks.
Interest in horse racing still has a ways too go.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/07/movies/marvels-the-avengers-top-box-office-record.html
"In a strong start to Hollywood’s summer movie season the superhero team in “Marvel’s The Avengers” took in about $200.3 million at North American theaters over the weekend, according to Walt Disney (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/disney_walt_company/index.html?inline=nyt-org) Studios, which released the film. That No. 1 result easily smashed what the movie industry considers the record, set last summer by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” (http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/453605/Harry-Potter-and-the-Deathly-Hallows-Part-2-Movie-/overview) for the biggest opening weekend of all time. Its total was $169.2 million if you don’t account for inflation, or about $172 million if you do. "
