I've been trying to get interested in new things. I've become absolutely fascinated with the size of the universe, stars, solar systems, planets, etc. Mainly from watching videos of Neil Degrasse Tyson. If you haven't seen any videos I'd recommend checking it out on youtube. Does anyone have any good recommendatiions for books, TV shows, or movies (non fiction) about the universe?

Thanks.

Good suggestion. Add to that Stephen Hawkings "A Brief History of Time."

"Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays" also by Stephen Hawking is the one of his that I enjoyed the most at the time it came out.

Kubrick's "2001" movie is extremely thought-provoking.

A few books from my shelf:
The Arrow of Time - Peter Coveney and Roger Highfeild
The Last Three Minutes - Paul Davies
The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene
Cosmos - Carl Sagan

I recommend anything by Brian Greene and Carl Sagan. Cosmos was a TV series back in the day, I'm pretty sure The Elegant Universe was on Discovery or something like that.
I've seen "2001" about 65 times, the first time when it was a new film, playing in the theaters.
In the early 90's I was lucky to attend a seminar about black holes given by Steven Hawking at a university. It was very interesting, to say the least, and a thrill to be in his presence.
Have fun !

Enjoy yourself. I purchases an Edmund 4" refractor telescope maybe 35 years ago and really got into astronomy. Bought tons of books which get outdated in no time Research is constantly rewriting everything. I suppose my interest was redirected over the years because I haven't had it out in years and only read what pops up in the newspaper. It's a wonderful hobby however, and the study is almost endless . My lifelong dream is to witness a supernova somewhere close enough in our galaxy that lights up the night, but doesn't fry us at the same time.

Here's one I picked up a few years ago from a college bookstore. This, as I recall, is the standard text used for beginning Astronomy and avoids the esoteric mathematics needed for upper division classes. Very readable and written by scientists not self-styled internet cosmologists, filled with great color plates and descriptive diagrams.
