Internal probe is a code word for damage control.

It is not really about getting at the truth, and then taking the appropriate disciplinary action.

It is more about how can one win in the arena of public opinion.

Lies like this one occur not because some individual made a terrible mistake, but because they work in an environment that encourages and rewards such behavior. This is a case where the company should be punished more than the individual. Free speech and willful evil intent are two different things.
