Interesting. Even more interesting is the fact that RGS and Parnham are trying to make amends...

So much for the "big bettors only want to bet into large pools" theory....

From the Harness Racing Update article:
Parnham zeroed in on the two winners, Clearly Possessed and
Ideal Miss but somehow an error was made when it came to calculating
the size of the double pool, which was a bit more than $6.000.

RGS and Parnham have agreed to add $2,000 into the daily double pool at Buffalo on the next three Friday nights to make up for the unintended winning bet.

Is there an opportunity here at Buffalo Raceway the next 3 Friday's [4/6,4/13,+ 4/20]with $2000. in free money being added to the daily double pools?

On a pool size of $6000. the takeout would be negated, the edge gets reduced though as more's wagered into the bet.

So much for the "big bettors only want to bet into large pools" theory....Amen. According to this article they’re everywhere:

This company is one of several in the United States that uses computerized selection wagering, looking for overlays, and wagers multi-millions annually including virtually every track in the country.

Why wouldn't they want to bet into large pools? The larger the pool, the more they can bet, and the more they can make.

But they're not going to ignore small pools...they'll just bet less (except in this case, when a mistake caused them to bet way too much).

"This added sum to the net payout will likely increase the payout for the early
Daily Double on these three nights by up to 33 per cent. It will be a great
opportunity for Daily Double bettors," said Jim Mango, COO of Buffalo Raceway.

The mistake/incident brought some attention to Buffalo Raceway, and might
attract a few extra dollars to the DD pool the next 3 Fridays. How much of an
"opportunity" it actually will be remains to be seen.

Even more interesting is the fact that RGS and Parnham are trying to make amends...I thought that was odd too. Why?

no one would be complaining if they didn't hit the bet & overlays were there to be cashed :)

It could have been worse. He could have caught his mistake and canceled a large part of his bet in the last minute. How much of an uproar would that have caused?

Only $3959. was bet into the DD pool on the first Friday night at Buffalo
Raceway, does the extra $2000. get added to this amount?

I heard there were some legal issues with this proposed "seeding" of the DD pool with extra money, and they have resorted to other methods of trying to spread good will in the aftermath of this debacle.

Even more amazingly, how did the 'public' let the second winner pay $29, when they could see the absurd DD probable.

Lots of noise gets made after the race, but no one wants to put their money where their mouth is before the running

Some rat maiden got pounded 9/2 - 5/2 at the bell today in NY and ran out. If it won, they'd be all over it saying how the big money robbed them again. Can't have it both ways, and if you watch the pools carefully, there's plenty of money lost by the late action.

1) I'd be interested in finding out how much they intended to bet...

2) Why would they be adding $6000? whats their motivation?

3)How do we convince other tracks to add money when a payoff looks smaller than we think it should be? (ie: last year I had an exacta that paid around $31-$39... I remember because the exacta paid the same amount that a win bet on the winner paid, and the horse to place paid somewhere around $17..

Considering how many people bet, and the smallish pool sizes, its amazing how 'in line' most payoffs are.

Many exactas come back light in NY , but they are so used to it there , they don't even notice anymore.
