Just 8 races yesterday and a total of 44 runners. Well under $1 million handle.

I used to look forward to playing the p4, but these small fields are a turn-off, and the payoffs are tougher. Plus, it seems like the fields are more stacked with like horses, tough to find an edge.

really loved to play the p4's there the last 6 weeks of 2011 (HUGE payoffs), then the fields shrunk the 2nd week or so of 2012....I don't even pull pp's for LA anymore, haven't since mid January

in partnership owning a few cheap horses at LA. let me tell you, that is the track of last resort on the thoroughbred side. the attrition rate amongst thorughbred is staggering. who would have thought that running 2.5k claimers 4.5 furlongs around a turn in 51 in change would break most of the horses down? that track must be made of cement. any horse that races there 10 or more times is made of iron.

The most curious stat about the whole thing is owner standings. Just look who the leading quarter horse owner is and by how much.

Owner Standings (Quarterhorse - by Wins) LOS ALAMITOS Mon, Dec 26, 2011 through Mon, Mar 26, 2012

Edward C. Allred.... 76 12 11 11 $206,289
Robert Parra.......... 26 6 6 5 $39,672
Hinkins, David and Ross... 21 5 1 2 $23,855
Juan Humberto Moya.........9 4 2 0 $25,842
Martha F. Wells...............20 4 1 4 $54,878

If I was an owner, I would have a tough time trying to compete against those stats. At least Uncle Frank doesn't dominate at S.A.

The stupid new early post on Sat & Sun isn't helping either......

Heard Ed Burgart on the Thoroughbred LA show over the weekend. He said they'll be carding 2YO races in the next couple of weeks that should help the weak cards

Not sure I agree on this. The earlier start may keep a few more TB simulcast players hanging around instead of going home. Midwest and Eastern players no longer have to stay up past midnight to play the late LA races on Sat and Sun. One thing for sure is hurting, and that is the mutuel takeout on WPS wagers. In case we have forgotten, Los Al raised the take by 2% awhile back on straight wagers. Another example of just how much the takeout matters.
