View Full Version : Too many Chromes?
I am seeing slower and slower performance and when I check out what processes are running, I see multiple Chromes......what's up with this? Is something else doing things in the background, like a trojan?

Chrome uses a different process for each tab you have open, totally normal. For a speedup you can try deleting history and cache. I've found that can help a bit.
I only have one tab open.
How do you do anything in Chrome- I son't see any menus or buttons anywhere.
I have a bookmarks bar and that is it.
I liked Chrome when I first got, it was fast, but now, it s very slow and pretty much useless. sad part of it is is STILL better than FF, which has become totally useless.

I just checked my processes with Chrome and had 4 active with 2 tabs open. When I removed a tab 1 process went away. Pretty sure the rest will go away when I remove the last tab since that closes the browser.

if you have one chrome, one tab running you shouldnt see that I don't think, maybe some zombie processes from a crash. I'd just kill them all and see if they come back.
you should be able to get to settings using the little wrench in the top right for clearing stuff out.

Just checked and got 3 processes just from starting chrome (1 tab). They did all go away as expected when I killed the last tab which closes Chrome.

aha -- I looked it up. Each plug-in in chrome also gets its own process. So probably Flash, Silverlight, etc, you end up with more than one process on startup, one for each plugin. Plus one process per tab.

Chicken is on it. each process protects the other tabs from crashing. there is a way to stop this, but it's not worth it in my opine.
Tom, your menu for chrome is accessed by clicking the wrench icon up in the top right corner.
Also make sure you have the latest version. Just download the newest and install it over top of the old.

above is the chrome help link
Btw, check that task manager and tell us how many processes are running, it's in the bottom left corner.........

Interesting. Did a little more experimenting. So 3 come up when I start the browser and the tab is just displaying the most freq visited pages. So I haven't actually navigated to any site yet. If I click on the Apps tab or arrow over to show the apps a process goes away. I go back to the most visited and still have only the 2 processes.
But I wouldn't be surprised with what you found out to be about right.

make sure none are taking up cpu cycles. You may have to watch the list for a couple minutes. Also, I see that you have AVG running in the background......I would shut that down and see what happens.......... I never let Anti Virus run in the background on its own........ give it a try and see what happens........50 isn't that much nowadays.........as long as they aren't taking up cpu cycles

I have 109...lol
And like Ralph, I don't have any anti-virus or anti-spyware running in the background...
I cleaned out all the crap from the last 4 weeks and the speed up is noticeable.
Thanks guys!
Spoke too soon.
Next day, and until today, turtles were whizzing by!
Last night, 10 minutes per e mail down load!
Went to Time Warner's speed check site and was hitting 0.2!
Finally had a service call and they replaced my modem - NOW it is fast again.

May a wild YAK lay eggs in your modem rendering it 'confoosed' and slow you down to my schpeed.

now that would make a huge difference. Modem's that are going south will do that. They suddenly slow down, then start working again.......then slow down until they are toast. Usually heat related while they are dying.......the more you use....the hotter they get etc.........
glad you are back up to speed
