Astonishing East German Renovation (36 pics)

Photographer Stefan Koppelkamm took these pictures of East Germany in the early 90s, soon after the German reunification, when much of the buildings had yet to be rebuilt. He returned ten years later to take photos of the same locations, and found them completely transformed for the better.

First time I was in Europe we landed in Frankfurt and drove down to Bosnia. The thing that stood out on the drive was that as soon as we entered the old communist countries everything was gray, dreary, and depressing.

Some of the renovations are very nice.Keep in mind though, in many cases it looks like traditional materials were exchanged with what may be stucco, pre-cast concrete panels and ornaments, and fiberglass.A little of the original charm has been lost.
